Changemaker Archetypes

Changemaker Archetypes

This quarter’s theme is ‘Being a Changemaker.’ In the previous newsletter, I briefly explored the mindset of a changemaker.

In today’s newsletter, I want to delve into changemaker archetypes.

First, let us remind ourselves what it means to be a changemaker:

"A changemaker is someone who is taking creative action to solve a social problem."Ashoka.org

  • A changemaker takes creative action.
  • A changemaker aims to solve a social problem.
  • Action to solve a social problem.

In my research on changemaker mindsets, I came across some fascinating insights into the different types of changemakers and their styles. I would like to point out a correction from my previous newsletter: the archetypes framework was developed by The Story of Stuff Project.

Below is a list of the six archetypes based on their style:

  1. Builders – create change using engineering, design, or science. They are innovative, practical, and resourceful.
  2. Networkers – connect people and organisations over common goals and actions. They are outgoing, open-natured, and energetic.
  3. Nurturers – the source of strength for changemakers everywhere. They are caring, considerate, and community-orientated.
  4. Resisters – make up the front lines of changemaking. They are brave, impactful, and dynamic.
  5. Communicators – share knowledge in compelling and accessible ways. They are creative, thoughtful, and good listeners.
  6. Investigators – expose the problems we face and the solutions. They are inquisitive, persistent, and virtuous.

These archetypes provide a fascinating lens through which to view social change. What stands out for me is the many layers of changemaking. As you can see, there are different changemaking styles, each having a crucial role in creating the bigger picture: taking creative action to solve social problems.

Can you identify with any of the changemaker archetypes? Do you think you embody more than one?

According to The Social Leadership Coach, there are different types of social changemakers based on their work.

Here are the eight that stood out to me the most:

  1. Non-Profit, NGO, and Philanthropic Leaders – These individuals work for social impact organisations that are not for profit.
  2. Social Entrepreneurs – Innovative individuals who blend business principles with a social mission.
  3. Social Innovators – Social innovators and tech activists harness technology and innovation to tackle social problems.
  4. Social Communicators (Thought Leaders and Influencers) – These figures use their platforms to raise awareness, challenge societal norms, and inspire change.
  5. Social Communicators (Cultural Change Agents) – Focus on shifting attitudes, beliefs, and behaviours within society.
  6. Community and Civic Leaders – Actively engage with their communities and play a significant role in driving positive change, promoting social justice, and enhancing local well-being.
  7. Activists – Advance social movements.
  8. Teachers and Educators – Shape minds and lives, playing a pivotal role as social changemakers.

The discussion around changemaking is layered and rich. From understanding what a changemaker is to exploring the mindset and archetypes, all readers of this newsletter should feel equipped to identify where they fit within the broader changemaking spectrum.
