Hello,
“The greatest change you will make in the World will come from within. It will arrive when you gain a heartfelt appreciation of all that has led you to being who you are today.”
Rosalyn Palmer
Back in the early 80s I hitch hiked around Ireland with my then University boyfriend. We were studying Irish literature at the time. He had a penny whistle and would sit by which ever road in the middle of nowhere that we were stranded on and screech out a terrible tune. We had a backpack each and very little money. It didn’t matter, as we managed to hitch lifts at each stage of the journey. It was a very different World then.
Hitching was commonplace in rural communities as few people had cars. Most drivers obliged and stopped for us. Often, they were not going to where we had planned but we went anyway. There were no Air BnBs then or mobile phones and I never desired a night in a field full of cows, even though we had a rudimentary tent with us.?
My favourite lift came when we were deep in lush and emerald green County Claire and we were getting a tad concerned about dusk falling.? A battered old blue van came into view.? I flagged the driver down. He was charming. I said where we were headed and asked if we could hitch a ride. The priceless reply came: “Jesus if you want to go there then you don’t want to be starting from here”.?
This is how life or the thought of changing it feels as you say to yourself: “If only I didn’t have to start from here!”.? But you have to. That is the only place you can start. Even if it is so painful and disappointing that you would rather just not even think about it. In fact, the more painful your current location in life is the more you need to think about it.? Not for a long time as I’m sure that you have already been suffering for far too long and it is compromising your health, wealth and welfare.?
No, just long enough to work out what is causing the pain so you can create new and immediate strategies for lasting change. Via a journey of self-discovery, to a new continent of you. It’s like a tanker that changes course in an open sea by only a few degrees. To the naked eye, that minuscule change is unnoticeable but the resulting course often takes that ship not just to a different country, but a different continent.?
When everything around you changes and you don’t love all the changes then you can only go within. Past what we therapists know to be the ‘conditioned self’ to your ‘authentic self’. To the essence of your being. To the place you fear, when caught up on the merry go round of a busy life, that you can’t even find or identify with.?It is the most amazing transcendence when you move into the present and engage with life directly and authentically.

Practical steps you can take right now
If you’re not living the life you would like to be living, your thoughts and inner dialogue are the driving force behind that. If you want to change your life then start inside.??
To focus on the good and learn to work out what needs eliminating ask yourself every day:
1.???? What inspires me? Can I do some or all of that today?
2.???? Perhaps it is only a question of what you can do. What you can change. So, the MOST important question every day is to ask yourself:
What is achievable TODAY??If you are in lockdown or have external restrictions placed on you, you can still achieve the following that spells CHANGE:
a.???Choose your thoughts and change the meaning. Instead of saying ‘Oh I’m trapped’ say to yourself ‘I’ve wanted time alone to finish reading all those books for ages, now is that time’ or whatever works for you
b.???Hydrate your body well. Keep drinking water or similar and don’t drown your sorrows in alcohol as it is a depressant and very dehydrating. If you do enjoy an alcoholic drink then match it with a glass or water each time
c.???Always exercise and move your body. I love yoga and this can be done almost anywhere. There are wonderful online courses for free such as Yoga with Adrienne. Just dance around your kitchen or go for a walk. Whatever you do just MOVE. Apart from at night when you must sleep and rest enough.
d.??Never do anything that is not good for you or those around you or the World.? Ask yourself if it is a good thing before you do it. In your heart you will know and make the right choice.
e.??Go inside: meditate or be still. If you can’t sit and meditate then download one of the hundreds of meditation or hypnosis recordings available. I have a great selection!
f.????Eliminate sugary and junk foods. Eat well and treat your body like it is your best friend.
I wanted to share a recent interview I did with the Tummy Queen, Linda Booth for her Just for Tummies community.?
I find that I’m doing less and less interviews as I seek more time away from the computer and yet, an invitation from Linda is always an invitation to which I say YES
