Change Your Peer Group Change Your Life ??

Change your peer group, change your life.

You may have heard this before.

We’re the average of the 5 people we spend the most time with. If that’s true, then it means that it’s probably time for some self-analysis.

Here’s the reality - it’s almost impossible to become more that you currently are, whilst holding on to the same peer group.

Chances are they are where you are, but not where you want to go..... This is because people have a tendency to resist change.

You'll want to lower your standards, not because you are lazy or weak.

But because you're a good friend

Let me explain.

When I started in business I'd find it quite isolating, I'd speak to friends and family and they rarely understood what I was going through.

With all of a sudden having not just my own bills to pay but other people relying on me for their paychecks.

When I sought out other entrepreneurs they were attracted to different thing whether it be my audience, my clients or my advice for free.

Cut a long story short, most people wanted to 'get' something from me.

The type to be friendly as ever when they are in front of your face but wouldn't hesitate to put you down behind your back.

Especially if they felt it was advantageous to them or made them look better. It made me feel like crap, why am I seeking out there approval??

I was confused, which normally is a sign that a breakthrough was coming.

I was flicking through a startup magazine and noticed a picture of a guy I knew, we'd met each other through mutual friends a couple of times.

I never talked to him about business though, infact he had always been incredibly humble.

I asked if I could buy him lunch.

After chatting for a while I told him what I was experiencing,

I feel like I'm hanging out with the wrong people, they don't make me feel confident and I'm not getting anywhere in my business because of it.

He shared with me that he too went through a similar thing, until he met a mentor that told him about one thing you can do to change your life.

One process that the mentor taught him that had a dramatic impact on his life.

He asked,

If I show you how to do it, will you implement it?

It was a commitment frame, ofcourse I was all in,

What he shared with me next was life changing advice that completely changed the direction of my life and business.

I'll mention his name in the comments if he's comfortable me doing so.

Step 1

Write down a list of all your friends and family off the top of your head.

Not everyone on your Facebook or LinkedIn just the people you would see or speak to and consider friends.

They should all be able to fit on one page otherwise you're not doing it properly.

Step 2

Imagine you were living elsewhere, and you arrived in the city where a friend lives.

You call them unannounced and say,

I've only got one call but I'm at the airport I need some help. I haven't got any money on me and I need you to come and pick me up.

Anybody that you are not 100% sure will be there, cross them off your page.

100% sure.

Step 3

Imagine you were a fly on the wall at a social gathering.

Your friend is there and your name comes up, unless you are 100% sure they wouldn't engage in gossip or talking about you behind your back in a negative light cross them off the page.

OK that's it.

You shouldn't have more than 10 people left on your list.

When I first did it, I had 20 on mine.

It took me 2 weeks but after some conversation and the universe showing me a few things, I managed to get it down to 10.

Now these 10 people are what we call 'eagles'.

An eagle has a higher perspective.

It see's everything from above, it can choose it's prey and has a heightened awareness.

In my phone I put an eagle emoji next to their name and saved them in my favorites so they show up at the top of my contacts.

Every week you need to call 5 of them, my friend told me.

Everyone who was crossed off your list is now a turkey. The turkey is one of the most unintelligent animals and will stare at the sky for hours on end. They follow the herd and are seek shelter from the elements.

You are to stand guard to your mind and not answer their calls if they ring. You can call them back, sure. But you're not allowed to let them interrupt your day anymore.

I realised I barely ever called my eagle becaue I always knew they were good. I didn't feel the need to check in on them.

It was a bit weird the first couple times, when they're like "What's up bro?" and I'm like, "Uh, just checking in.." LOL but I got the hang of it.

When you free up space, you make room for something new and within 3 months I had changed 60% of my peer group.

You become who you surround yourself with.

If you hang out with turkeys you are going to learn how to follow the herd and cluck like one but if you spend your time with eagles you will soar above the rest with clarity and freedom.

This article is dedicated to the eagles in my life.

You know who you are ??????
