One day, I was traveling in public transportation, and I was looking out of the window, and I saw something.
It looked like, what is this? And I am wondering, why is this thing like this? Why is it so? It just looks strange to me. And I did realize that what I was seeing was not the right thing. Then I relaxed in the same transport, in the same bus, and the moment I relaxed, I saw it in a different way.
I then realized that when I leaned forward, the glass of the car had been tinted with a particular funny color. That was what gave me that impression that I initially saw. But when I leaned back and there was no glass, I now saw it exactly the way it ought to be.
Now, if I had not leaned back, I would not have known, or I may not have realized, that the glass was tinted. And that is exactly why I was seeing it that way. The moment I leaned back, and I saw it, I said, oh wow.
So, it was because I changed my lens that I saw that thing in a different way and the way it ought to be. Many people are losing opportunities today because they are not ready to change their lens. Many people are losing opportunity today because they are fixated on seeing things in a particular way.
Many people are losing out completely on opportunities just because they believe there is only one way to see things, or they refuse to see things from the perspectives of other people. One easy way to change your lens is, I am not talking about the physical lens you are wearing in your face. Of course, if that is bad, you need to change it, but that is not what I am even talking about.
It could be changing your perspectives. It could be looking at things from the perspectives of other people and trying hard to understand why they see things in that way. It could be seeing things from perspectives of people who have years of experience, people who have been to other countries.
One of the terrible things I have seen, you may not think it is terrible, but it is terrible, is the fact that I have seen people who have never been outside of a country, and they speak as though what happens in their country is the only reality. They speak as though what happens in their country must be exactly what happens, and it must be the same way that it happens in all other countries. No, what happens in your country can be peculiar to your country and what happens in your country may also be peculiar to your tribe.
It may not even be the same way in the entire country. If you drive up north, it may be different. If you go south, it may be different.
If you go west, in the same country, things may happen differently. So how much more going outside of your country? So, you need to change your perspective. You cannot continue to see the same thing every time or you cannot continue to see everything from the same lens.
Change your lens. Your lens can be limited. Your lens may be the problem.
Your lens may be the reason you have not been able to go far. When you are having difficulty seeing and you are using prescription lenses, you must change them after a while so that you can see better. So, it is the same thing with life.
If you change your lens, if you change your perspectives, you will see things better. And when you see things better, it means that you get more opportunities. You see more, you recognize, and you can leverage more opportunities.
So, it is important to change your lens. Change your lens for life. Change your lens about academics.
Change your lens about relocation. Change your lens about traveling to see what is happening in other parts of the world, in other parts of the country. Change your lens regarding other people.
It does not matter what their color is. It does not matter what their tribe is. Change your lens.
I remember that one big deal in most parts of the world is that certain people do not want their children to marry from a certain tribe, to marry from a certain country, to marry from another part of, it could be another part of town. So, when people change their lenses eventually, they realize that that person they did not want their children to marry, they are good. Nothing is wrong with them.
They are nice people. It was just an old perspective that got in their way. And to date, there are regretting the fact that they did not end up marrying the person they wanted to marry.
Some people who are white would choose not to marry a Black person. Some people who are Black would choose not to marry a white person, only to realize eventually that that person they wanted to marry would not have been bad, and that would have been the person that would make them happy. So, they went for color instead of choice, their own choice.
They went for, oh, this is a person that we like to marry from our country or from our tribe. These are the kinds of people that we like to marry. These are the ideal people.
Change your lens. If it is in the business environment as well, change your lens. If you do not change your lens, innovation will sweep you out.
If you do not change your lens, innovation will make you outdated. If you do not change your lens, the younger people who are constantly changing their own lens, they will become more active in your industry and they will render you useless. One of the challenges of disruption, particularly in the banking industry today, is fintech and the only reason fintech seems to be giving the banks a run for their money is because the fintech companies have changed their lenses.
The things that banks do not want to do, the financial inclusion that banks do not want to create, the fintech companies are creating them. So, for you to become better, for you to succeed, for you to advance in life, you must change your lens. Do not see everything from the same perspective.
