Be the Change You Seek…

We all have great ideas for making the world a better place. And we’re often quick to complain about the state of the planet. We wish that certain individuals would change their manner and make life easier for everyone else. We hope and wish for a better world and wring our hands in frustration. But is this all we can do? Are we like the people who shout and jeer from the touchline without ever placing a foot on the muddy field of play? This leads us to the purpose behind today’s discussion.

Let’s consider two simple suggestions. The first is simple enough. Stop complaining. Make a clear declaration that you’re going to give up this form of behaviour for at least twenty-fours. You might be very surprised at the results.? Complaining is an unhelpful, pernicious habit that erodes our willingness to make things better.? People who enjoy complaining rarely contribute anything useful to the situation. It’s just an extension of the way they see the world. They find fault rather than identifying opportunities for improvement. You might notice that the ones who complain the most are often very sensitive to any form of personal criticism. It’s as if complaining is a way to distract everybody else from the personal areas where they could use a little improvement.

Second suggestion. If you’re not happy about a particular situation, be prepared to do something to improve it. If there’s nothing that you can do, don’t waste your energy complaining. It makes absolutely no difference to the problem but it wastes your energy and distracts you from areas in your life where you really can make a difference.

By removing this wasteful activity from your daily repertoire of behaviour, you’ll notice a more positive approach to life’s challenges that will help you to see your circumstances more clearly. This is a great way to engage your creativity in the service of seeking improvements. The same principle applies to your personal growth and development. When you identify areas that need your attention, you’ll feel empowered to take the appropriate steps to make things better. This is a much healthier outlet for your energies than channeling your thoughts and feelings into complaining.
