Change the way you look at Sustainable Fashion

What comes to your mind when you hear the words Sustainable Fashion?

Expensive brands? Discarding things that you already own? Outfits and accessories made out of uncomfortable materials?

We do not blame you. In today's world the concept of sustainability has gotten a lot of popularity and acceptance, which is absolutely necessary. But people get scared when they think of sustainability now. The first thing that comes to their minds is that they'll have to sacrifice a ton and change their lifestyles completely.

But that is not the case, there are thousands of things that you can do everyday without changing any major component of your life, and still contribute to sustainability.

A week ago we conducted a survey, wanting to know how the LinkedIn community takes steps in their daily lives that make fashion more sustainable. We are glad and proud to know that all of you are trying to do your part in fulfilling the global mission towards sustainable fashion. But that's not enough, we need to make even wiser choices to progress.

What are these wise choices you ask? The good ol' REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE. We've been hearing this mantra all our lives but most of us have failed to apply it in our daily choices.

We at Rent An Attire have been a part of the sustainable fashion revolution for a long time now. It's in our name. By renting an outfit, you are REUSING outfits that have barely been used, ultimately, REDUCING the number of new clothes produced and ultimately reducing the carbon footprint caused by that.

Luxury fashion is indeed luxurious but at the same time it is pretty harmful for the environment. The heavy fabrics from the outfits not only leave a carbon footprint while production, but they are very tough to decompose. Cambridge defines "to waste" as "an unnecessary It is very wasteful to discard these clothes after a single use. The ratio of money spent to the amount of time you wear that outfit is bizarre. The heavy fabrics used are environmentally 'un'friendly, but they are super durable. Getting enough use out of it is how we can REDUCE the waste generated by us. Our revenue share model, EARN THROUGH US has you covered! Rent An Attire has a model where the common folks who have already spent a ton on designer outfits can list their precious outfits with the company to REUSE. These outfits are listed in the collection and one can earn revenue out of the same.

RECYCLE is the toughest of all since not everyone has access to the resources required. Donating is the way to go about it then. Donating doesn't necessarily mean that someone else uses your outfit. Plenty times these outfits get recycled or upcycled to produce a completely different outfit. Rent An Attire has never in its history discarded an outfit, we try to upcycle, but when it's out of our hands, we let the pros at the donation centre handle it.

To conclude, we would like to leave you with some choices that you can make in your daily lives to make fashion sustainable:

  • The 30 wears test- Buy an outfit only when you are sure that you can get at least 30 uses out of that outfit
  • Repair and upcycle your clothes whenever possible- There are tons of DIYs on YouTube, it is fun to watch too!
  • Donate usable clothes that you do not wear anymore- Come on! You are never going to wear that Tom and Jerry t-shirt again
  • Exchange, exchange, exchange- Swap clothes with your friends and siblings to feel like you own a gazillion clothes
  • Buy from thrift stores- You can get some sweet deals on premium brands
  • Rent whenever possible- It's cheaper, easier and you'll never have to repeat the same outfits
  • List your premium outfits that you really do not want to donate for on rent

FYI, Rent An Attire's got your back with the last two!
