Change At Times Can Feel Downright Hard

Change At Times Can Feel Downright Hard

I’ve been thinking a lot about change lately. As much as we may embrace change, the fact is, there can be aspects of it that can be downright hard.

Even when we have complete peace about the change, that is, know for certain the change is right for us, we will still experience grief in some way.

Take my move to Detroit for example. For the months leading up to my move and the five months of living here, I have felt pretty good about my decision. I live in a great neighborhood close to many Detroit treasures like the Dequindre Cut , Eastern Market , and downtown. There are endless things to do in the city. I have met some amazing people doing amazing work. I have friends whom I can spend time with. And the list goes on. Yet in spite of all this, there are times when I feel downright lonely. Times when I long for Kalamazoo.

Living somewhere your entire life, 44 years to be exact, and then uprooting to take root somewhere else can be jolting. Yes, I’ve traveled a lot for pleasure and work - both nationally and internationally - but living somewhere is not the same. Although change can feel downright hard, staying the same can actually be harder. We don’t need to be in pursuit of change for change’s sake though. All we have to do is be open to change when change is calling us.

Our natural design is to evolve, which of course, requires change. Although we can choose to not change, if we make that choice, then we are also choosing stagnation. And if that’s the case then we are also choosing somewhat of an unrequited life.

My hope is that we all design and attract the life we want. The only pathway to get there is to make a concerted decision to embrace change no matter how hard it feels.

As the Persian adage goes, ‘this too shall pass.’ We can be rest assured that when change is right for us, the hard feelings associated with it will eventually subside.
