Change of Seasons / Change of Mindset

Business development is all about change. Being prepared to pivot at a moment’s notice to help a client, but also being strategic and tactical in your activities to build your network and get work.?Put yourself in the right place at the right time. Stretch yourself when all you want to do is stay at your desk and do what you were trained to do.?Make the effort to do something outside your comfort zone. Overcome your fear and enjoy the ride!

As we move into the last part of the year everyone is ramping up their business development activities to meet their goals for 2023 and plan for 2024.

1.???If you haven’t already done it, update the contact list you made at the beginning of the year to see who you have contacted and who you need to get in touch with.?If you didn’t have one, don’t worry – make one.?List your best clients and contacts, as well as folks you haven’t spoken to in a while, and make notes on how you will continue to provide them with valuable information and communicate with them over the last 4 months of the year.?If you have a CRM, use it – it will tell you who you have been connected to and when the last time you worked with them – it’s a good tool to keep you on track of whom to call and will give you reminders when to follow up.

2.???Make a weekly list of at least two-three business development activities you want to do – high, medium, and low priority. Check them off as you accomplish them and then create a new list on Friday for the following week. Keeping yourself on track will help you achieve your BD goals.

3.???If there are conferences you will be attending this fall, start planning. Review the agenda for contacts and key presentations you want to attend.?If you can get the attendee list, check to see who you might know is also attending, and make plans with them to meet up.?If you can’t get the list, but had last year’s list, check it and reach out to people that may be attending.?

4.???Your brand is important!?Do not forget your social media/LinkedIn presence.?Share things that your company puts out. If you are attending a meeting, post to let folks know you will be there and want to connect with them. If you are presenting, publish the abstract of your talk.

Enjoy the last couple of weeks of summer and I will check in again around Labor Day.
