Change is scary. Take the first step today.
Welcome to 2017.
Change is scary. Most things in life worth doing are scary.
Changing job roles is no different. After all, there is a lot to be afraid of. Numerous studies on the subject have shown that people are afraid of failing, afraid of losing out financially, afraid of job security in a new environment and afraid of proving their worth in a new organisation. During the last two decades these are the fears that I have seen paralyse people into staying in jobs and companies that quite frankly are making them miserable.
The thing is, it's ok to be afraid. It's part of what makes us human.
But don't let it stop you from creating a better life for you and your loved ones.
I have the following tips for people considering a change in jobs.
- Define what your 'push' factors are. These are the things you aren't happy with that are 'pushing' you to consider walking out of the door. Is is your boss? Is it the company? The location? The working hours? The lack of variety? The financial package?
- Define what your 'pull' factors are. These are the things that will 'pull' you through the door of a new employer. Will it be an inspirational boss? Will it be a certain base salary or benefits package? Will it be because the company is only a 20 minute commute?
- Write all of the above points down under a 'push' and 'pull' column and analyse how much you really want to move and what it will take to make the move.
- Decide what are deal breakers but here is the BIG tip- don't expect to get 100% of what you want. That's not realistic.
- Take action to make it happen, only by getting out in the market and talking to people will you be able to make an informed decision as to whether a job move is the right thing for you.
Back in 2008 I made the decision to start my own recruitment business. I had a long, long list of reasons why I shouldn't and what I was afraid of. That list included the fact that we were just entering into a major recession, I had just moved house, got married and had financial obligations. I was also in a good job with a nice bunch of people. But in my heart I knew it was my time and looking back the most difficult step was the first one.
It's ok to be afraid, but don't wait for the perfect scenario as you will never make the change you want to achieve your life and career goals.
Good luck - make 2017 a year to remember!
