Change = Relevant = Truth

Is your business changing, relevant, and as close to the truth as possible? The shopping habits and business models of old are being tested these days. I believe many big companies are not reconciling with the truth that they need to change their business structure to meet the demands of today's shopper to thrive. The direct selling business model is now more relevant than ever and businesses must adapt to this change or become irrelevant if they don't reconcile with this truth.
I've been encouraged by the posts from Dhiraj Rajaram about "Time to Untrue..." and another from Ziyad Jawabra "Nokia's CEO..." comment. Their posts influenced and inspired me to write this new post which I hope you enjoy. Thank you gentlemen.
My wife and I run our own virtual franchise of Rodan + Fields (R+F). We are distributors, direct sellers, contractors…(whatever you want to call it) essentially we get a 1099 at the end of the day. We sell a clinically proven premium skin care line in America and Canada (soon Australia as well). Currently R+F is in the number four premium skin care spot behind Clinique, Lancome, and Estee Lauder. It is amazing that R+F has only been in existence for just over a decade. R+F has not only eaten up market share but it has expanded the market for premium skincare (Think Irish Spring converts). At the current growth rate, R+F will surpass the number 4 spot soon. So how in the world has this company come into the marketplace and grown so quickly to be in competition for the number 3 and likely 2 top spots in all American premium skincare companies? Talk about disruption and shaking up the establishment, right!? I believe it's because R+F adapted quicker than any other "over the counter" skincare company by reconciling with the truth on how consumers buy and how businesses are structured. They intentionally took their products out of the big box store and allowed independent sellers to sell their product directly (despite being the number one clinical brand at Nordstrom). No middleman, no big store entrance costs, no marketing...just people selling their product directly. Low and behold...they're the fast growing premium skincare company in America. Rodan + Fields changed = became relevant = true growth and sustainability.
So who is at risk? The big box retailers and the premium skincare manufacturers selling their products inside them. Unfortunately, these manufacturers and big boxes are not adapting to new consumer shopping habits and direct selling business models. As this post title suggests, many manufactures are not changing and so they are no longer relevant and they are not reconciling with the truth. Picture your local mall how empty is it now versus 20 or even 10 years ago?
Another group at risk are all the employees working in those stores. Especially the men and women behind the counters trying to sell premium skincare products. I encourage all of those folks to consider the current landscape and look into other career options or perhaps peek into our business opportunity and bring over their current clientele base before they become and irrelevant.
So as it relates to Dhiraj's post, our business model is the new truth and so until it's untrue we're staying the course. And relating to Ziyad's post, businesses need to change and fortunately we are part of that change.
