Change Perspective

Change Perspective

I used to believe that I needed to know everything in order to be able to coach someone effectively.

For years that belief stopped me reaching out to people I could have helped until I realised that I'd never succeed if I didn't flip this belief and create a new one.

The moment everything changed was when I had a short conversation with a bloke I met at a networking event. He was a printer on the verge of giving up and getting a job. He was feeling overwhelmed, totally stuck in his thinking, and appeared at the end of his tether.

I asked him a few questions about what was going on for him then moved on to the next person at the event like you do. I thought nothing more about it until a couple of weeks later when I received a text from the guy thanking me for helping him to get clear about what he wanted and helping him see what he could do to get there, all in a five-minute conversation!

Now, clearly, I knew nothing about printing (and still don’t) but I do know the questions to ask to reframe a situation and help people regroup and this is what makes the difference to so many of my clients in the same way that it made a difference to the printer.

So, my new belief is that all I need to make me a great coach is to care about people enough to ask the right questions, enable them to access the resources they already have, and to use those resources to the best advantage to get the best outcomes for them.

It's amazing what we can achieve when we change our perspective isn’t it?!

Totally agree Caroline. Not sure whether this works: “Questions are the answers “. What do you think?
