Be the change is not an option, this is our responsibility
As COP24 came to an end, I'm taking the opportunity to speak up on environmental issues.
As a company, we are definitely a key climate change player. As Royal Canin, we strongly believe that providing health nutrition solutions and protecting the environment equally contribute to make a better world for pets. Climate change also jeopardizes our business continuity: it will increasingly impact on our raw material availability and we have to adapt.
This is why, in 2015, we commit to be Sustainable in a Generation (SIG). We set a goal of eliminating 100% of the GHG emissions from our direct operations in 2040 and 67% of the GHG emissions from our full value chain by 2050.
Logically, our leaders’ salary already includes quantitative targets for the reduction of our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions since several years.
As part of the SIG plan, we closely work with associates and suppliers to reduce our energy consumption, use and even produce renewable energy! We have already eliminated crops from deforested areas from our raw materials used in Europe and we progressively deploy low impacts and climate resilience sourcing strategies for each raw material.
Today, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) further challenges us: while our science-based targets were developed to limit warming to 2°C, the latest IPCC report clearly highlights that we must limit warming to 1,5° compared to 2°C to avoid number of climate change impacts.
I am well aware that a real shift in our way to work is needed to reach the 1,5°C goal. Further efforts are needed and I’m personally convinced that working together, with our associates, our suppliers, our competitors and the civil society is the non-negociable path to achieve this ambition. Be the change is not an option, this is our responsibility.
