Congratulations on your new job! Too bad, poor management, low to absolutely no initiative are the company norm.?
After a rather disconcerting stint, I landed in one of the so-called “great places to work with”?- the company had been around for a few years and, lo and behold, it was settled in a mentality of “this is how we have always done it.”?
Whenever I brought up a new idea or an initiative or tried to question the status quo, I was either ignored or asked to take up another project or was told that this wasn’t the need of the hour and sometimes was simply told?- “This is how we have always done it”.?
If I had a dollar for every time someone told me, "we've always done it this way", I'd be a millionaire!?
Oftentimes, companies/ teams don't have the foresight to adapt to change and this resistance to change more often than not, stems sometimes from a place of arrogance, sometimes out of fear - fear of the unfamiliar, of the new or the good ol' fear of failure and in some cases, it's not fear or arrogance but downright indolence, as doing something differently immediately thrusts you out of your comfort zone.?
So, how do we really go from "This is how we have always done it" to "What can we do better?"?
- stop resting on your past laurels?
- don't change for the sake of change, work towards identifying the right opportunities?
- ask yourself, "how can I empower my colleagues/employees to believe in the power of change?"?

- talk to your people as not only does ongoing communication builds trust, it also enables the employees to question?
- understand that change happens gradually, over a period of time and not overnight?
- remember, change is inevitable and growth is optional?
- changes are brought about by people & not the organisation & hence mental scripts / biases / personal vendetta etc can always hamper your decision-making skills and hence, always rely on data.?Let data make the decision for you.?
- be adaptable; the ability to change (or be changed) to fit new circumstances – is a crucial skill for leaders, and an important competency in emotional intelligence.?
With Covid 19 in the picture, the shift has already begun. We can no longer stick to the phrase “this is how we have always done it.” However, there’s still a long way to go before we become more receptive to change.?
The Greek philosopher Heraclitus was surely onto something when he said, "the only constant in life is change".?
Hail Heraclitus!

3 年Well written, Nisha Nair! Change is surely a constant but still faces resistance from many people because it requires us to get out of our comfort zone. But not every change is net positive. So, it's important that any new change we make has a positive impact on the society as a whole. I think it was Darwin who said - It's not the strongest that survive nor the most intelligent ones, but the ones most adaptable to change.
