Change One Word, Change Your Life

Have you dreamed of achieving great things in your life?
BUT then...
something happened and you didn’t take the steps to make those dreams come true.
Maybe you set a goal, like a decision to lose weight, asking your boss for a raise, or prospecting someone influential to join your team.
BUT then something stopped you...
Do you know what happened?
Your “BUT” happened. No, not that one silly, it's a different one. Stick with me here :-)
It's the word "But".
The truth is, we have so many "buts" coming out of our mouths, that we aren’t even aware we are saying it anymore.
Saying the word "but" is a dream killer that robs you of possibility.
You see in language, we use conjunctions – words that connect two clauses together. Words like: If, And or But.
I’m going to share how you can make your dreams reality by changing just one little word in your vocabulary.
Let's start with some examples.
One might say...
"I want to ..."
- Ask that girl out on a date “but” I’m too shy
- Lose weight "but" I hate the gym
- Recruit more teammates "but" I have no one to talk to
- Have a successful business "but" I don't have enough time
As soon as you use the word "But", you linked two phrases that actually have NOTHING to do with one another.
In effect, you just killed the possibility you could have created for yourself.
Here's a little story to illustrate...
On Dec 4, 1982, a baby named Nick was born in Australia. He was born with no arms, no hands, no legs, and one tiny little flipper foot.
As Nick grew up, how easy would it have been to say
- I want to comb my hair and shave "but" I have no arms.
- I'd go swimming with you "but" I don’t have any limbs
- I’d play golf with you "but" I have no legs and arms
- I’d love to have a girlfriend "but" I can't even hold her hand.
Nick is an amazing young man and an inspiration to many, including me.
I can only imagine he didn’t use "BUT" when thinking about things he wanted to do.
Instead, he would say, "I want to comb my hair "AND" I don’t have arms"?
With "AND", the second phrase no longer prohibits the first.
It’s true Nick doesn’t have limbs yet he is VERY capable of combing his own hair.
When growing up, if someone would say to him, "I'd invite you to go swimming BUT you don’t have arms and legs", Nick would view that as their limiting belief, not his.
He'd say to himself, "I want to swim "AND" I don’t have arms and legs".
When he used AND, his brain went to work figuring out how he could swim without arms or legs.
By saying AND instead of BUT, he created possibilities for himself.
Nick now has a list of accomplishments most of us could only dream of.
He...
- Skydives
- Jumps off diving boards and swims to the edge of the pool, gets out and does it again.
- Surfs
- Plays golf
- Moves a soccer ball down the field
- Is married to a gorgeous woman and has 4 children
- He is a public speaker, owner of two companies, and inspires millions of people.
Nick did not let his arms, his legs, or his "buts" stop him. He changed one word and created an amazing life for himself.
So, how does this apply to you...
Instead of saying something like...I want to lose weight, "but" I hate the gym.
Say the same sentence using "and".
I want to lose weight "and" I hate the gym. So, maybe instead I could try hiking, biking, jumping rope, swimming and the list goes on and on.
See what I mean?
In business, instead of using "but", say to yourself...
"I want to generate 5 sales this month "AND" I don't have anyone to talk to".
Since those are two independent statements and one doesn’t affect the other. You might think you don't have anyone to talk to, yet your brain can now begin figuring out how you CAN find more people.
The big question for you now is...
What possibilities exist for you now that your mind is free to think of them?
I wish you all the best and massive success!
