C H A N G E.  It’s what prompted this end-of-year post. I thought I should reflect on the end of our 15th year of this little non-profit, Ophelia’s Place.  I had grandiose ideas at the beginning of the year to tell the story of this journey, which ended up being a blog or two and a few social media posts. It’s okay, I’m not sure the history is important. I think what is important is the story of change… as in transformation, as in coins.

First let’s talk transformation – Ophelia’s Place officially launched a movement called Circles of Change which is about creating change within your circle of influence. It’s about what you can do to change the conversation around health, beauty and body image. We created warrior circles around movement, health, community, parenting and a few others (www.circlesofchange.org). We also created a pretty cool manifesto that is an invitation to reclaim health, redefine beauty and restore our love for our bodies. We’ve had hundreds of warriors sign up to be part of this movement, and we’ve had the privilege to see up close and personal the change that is happening. It’s small and mighty and beautifully hopeful. It consists of aha moments and a growing desire to make more changes. They don’t need to be big to be significant. Which leads me to the 2nd definition of change – coins especially of low denominations. Our café (www.cafeat407.org) is a small and mighty supporter of Ophelia’s Place. Not only does it intimately understand our mission - it helps us live it out loud by offering nourishment to all those who walk through the doors. It also collects the change our guests place in a glass jar.  Our gracious team doesn’t accept tips, nope, they never have - as it was the desire of our very first café manager, Sarah, to give back and support the cause.  Since then the team has not only honored that but are part of communicating the mission and the message. Yep, they’re kind of like rock stars.  To date those coins of low denominations = $47,641.70. We are just $2,358.30 shy of our $50,000 goal.

Small change = a big difference.

As we end 2017 and our 15th anniversary – I wish to thank all who have given, supported, changed and believed in this work. You see that’s the story we should be telling… the story that small change matters + it’s what has shaped and supported and sustained Ophelia’s Place these past 15 years. That and a whole lot of faith...

and a husband who makes sure the lights come on.   

I am humbled and grateful and hopeful for all this change.
