Change Management

Change Management activities are necessary to overcome employees’ resistance to change. It is the responsibility of change enablers to make the workforce efficient enough to sustain change and excel during the process. Change management activities are games or simulations that motivate employees to accept change and motivates the employees to embrace the changes.?

1.????Crossover?

Crossover is an activity where four opposite teams of the same organization need to cross over following a set of rules by stepping over a set of pre-arranged bricks.

Introduce variations by changing the pattern of the bricks…It’s an excellent ice-breaker to start with since it brings all the employees of the organization into harmony. They learn that we can win by helping the other team win as well and that’s the trick or secret to finish the game on a high.?

2.????Fishbowl Discussion

Will you like someone else to take a decision which will have an impact on your work or you would like to be actively involved in the decision-making process.?

Furthermore, the moment you allow a selected few to make decisions that impact a larger group of stakeholders, you and the team of selected few will often face resistance.?Fishbowl discussion is an apt exercise for such kind of situations.

Ideally we would set up a circle of eight chairs at a table and ask six people to participate as the "inner" group leaving two chairs empty. The remaining participants will stand around the table as observers and take notes.

The lead facilitator briefly presents a real-life or role-play situation for discussion. Only the six inner participants begin discussing the issue.

During natural pauses in the conversation, observers may sit in an empty chair to provide input. If there is no natural break, the facilitator should ask if observers have any input. Continue the conversation for a maximum of 12-15 minutes, then wrap up with final meeting minutes and action items.

Add variations by using Role-play scenarios or by swapping the initial participants with observers.?

?3.????Pattern Identification

Participants take three minutes to write a response to "How does change typically affect you?" Halfway through the activity, ask participants to continue writing their answers, but with their other hand. Once the three minutes are over, have participants think about their responses and how they handled writing with their non-dominant hand.

This activity allows participants to express their beliefs on how they think they handle change, then witness their actual habits during times of change and discomfort. This helps them understand potential patterns in dealing with change.

4.????Keypunch

It is simple looking activity wherein members are to punch numbers in a sequence under stringent conditions and time limit. Teams need to coordinate and execute it flawlessly. One’s individual efficiency affects the entire team. The team which embraces the change effectively scores well over the other which cannot adapt to the changes in the variations of the game.

The facilitator can easily convey the importance of change within the organization and could set the right expectations of the employees. We can also make our employees realize how change could propel their careers to new dimensions.

5.????Bounce Back

A fun loving game and it’s easy to play in a playground or an open space with some bouncy balls. Just ask the employees to throw the ball on the ground or on the wall depending upon the venue and space.?After a while when they get settled – ask them was there an instance where the Ball did not bounce back!!!

The answer to this question is definitely “NO.”?Use this analogy to convey that just like the bouncing ball they will also overcome all the hurdles and changes (challenges) during the change process thereby asking them to adapt to the change or contribute to the change.

The learning here is whatever the change be it in systems or in process, you will bounce back better in your job.?

?Change is a continuous process and with every change, one must strive to make the company a couple of notches better. The process can be further streamlined would become smooth only when every employee gets involved. There are opportunities everywhere, and you have to be prepared when the they are presented. Look inside yourself. Discover your strengths and what could use improvement by changing yourself. Once you do, you can create your plan and start taking the necessary steps to lead you to the success you desire.
