Change Maker's Book Club: Year In Review

Change Maker's Book Club: Year In Review

2017 was an unforgettable year for many reasons. Personally, I’ll never forget the extraordinary people I met through my Change Maker’s Book Club. These individuals each have their own unique perspective on the ways we live and work today, and I’m grateful to them for sharing their insight with me.

Fortunately for you and me, they’ve also shared that insight in some extraordinary books. These books were ahead of the curve in 2017. They informed the way I approached trends and business challenges, and they’ll continue to do so in the coming year. Anyone who wants to understand how the world works in our day and age would do well to check these titles out.

If you haven’t already, I hope you’ll join my Change Maker’s Book Club and give these books the attention they deserve.

  • Joi Ito – Whiplash

As a leader of the MIT Media Lab, Joi has a front row seat to the changes accelerating our era. This book will give you an appreciation for the forces speeding up the way we live.

  • Steven Johnson – Wonderland

Steven understands better than anyone that “play” challenges convention and drives innovation. Read to learn how fun and rule-breaking can unleash your organization’s latent creativity.

  • Susan David – Emotional Agility

As a Harvard psychologist and a business consultant, Susan has special expertise in helping people develop change-ready mindsets.

  • Simon Sinek – Start with Why

Why is “Why?” the most important question to ask? No one can explain it better than Simon. His book is an essential read for anyone who wants to be a better problem-solver.

  • Kim Scott- Radical Candor

Kim’s book is an essential guide to balancing care for your employees with a willingness to challenge them, two critical parts of being a good boss.

  • Charles Duhigg – Power of Habit

By outlining the science behind habit, Charles empowers anyone and everyone to build better behaviors and get more out of their lives.

  • Nilofer Merchant – Power of Onlyness

In one of the most inspiring books of the year, Nilofer makes her case for why you have a greater chance of making a difference in the world today than ever before in history.

  • Satya Nadella – Hit Refresh

Satya is a role model for all of us. His book is a riveting read about the potential for transformation, whether we’re talking on an individual or company-wide scale.

  • Tim O’Reilly – WTF: What’s the Future and Why It’s Up to Us

The future of technology is exciting, but it can also be baffling. Tim, a longstanding leader from Silicon Valley, breaks down the changes on the horizon in an engaging book for anyone interested in the years ahead.

  • Eric Ries – The Startup Way

If anyone is an expert on startups, it’s Eric. His follow-up to The Lean Startup is an insightful take on how startup culture has reshaped the way businesses large and small approach management and innovation.

  • Adam Grant – Originals

Adam’s book is quickly becoming a modern classic. A collection of case studies of innovative minds, Originals reminds us all that it’s important to be brave and challenge the status quo if we want to achieve great things.

I hope you’ll join me again in 2018 for another exciting series of extraordinary books and the Change Makers who write them.

I'm falling out of my chair over the Freudian slip of "Emotional Anxiety" on Susan David's book, Emotional Agility. Did anyone else catch this?
