Change Leadership is about keeping your nose CLEAN

Leadership is about keeping your nose CLEAN. That’s what I tell my students at LaSalle Business School when we discuss modern leadership in the context of business transformation.

For me, a leader is a person who tunes in with other people in thought, word and action at such a level that these people feel confident with- and respect that person to act with him or her, and other members of his team, to achieve a common goal.

CLEAN is an acronym I made up to help remember that there is only so much one can learn about leadership and that it is truly about keeping your nose clean.

- Consistent between what you think, say and do, between heart and head.

- Loyal to your values, beliefs and your team.

- Empathic, able to put yourself in the place of the other because you know yourself.

- Authentic and totally comfortable with yourself and your actions, dialoguing, negotiating, capable of agglutinating.

- Networker by nature, capable of creating and maintaining collaborative networks.

There is more to it, but the person who truly keeps his nose CLEAN has the base to be or become a good leader because he has the right mindset and attitude. Being consistent, being loyal, empathic and authentic is who you are, not what you can learn. Teams work as a lie detector 24/7. They can tell in near real-time if a person is a leader or not. Above all, authenticity is detected quickly because it is not possible to deceive throughout the day. Their – the employees - perception of leadership decides if a project will live or die, NOT the MANAGEMENT!
