But first, a story. In 1993, Jack Fuller, the Publisher Of The Chicago Tribune, kept calling me up to his office.
He said we had spoken once before at a meeting, and he wanted to get some advice. The first two meetings with him were circular "Who's on first" meetings. The second meeting became clearer when he asked me, "Who would I recommend he hire as his VP of Marketing and Strategy?" I told him I would go outside and hire someone with strategy and change consulting experience from McKinsey or BCG.
By the third meeting, Jack was getting irritated with me and finally said, "Why don't you want the job?" I was dumbfounded by this and said something like, "Jack, you don't want me - I don't think the newspapers are going to be here in the same form in five years."
This irritated him even more, but then he started laughing. He said, "Well, I think you're wrong; I think the newspapers will be stronger than ever in five years, but what you just said is why I want to hire you."
And Jack backed up his word. We launched what became CareerBuilder.com in 1994 and Cars.com and Apartments.com in 1997.
By 2000ish, newspaper classified advertising $s started to run for the door. Mostly going to vertical channels like?CareerBuilder.com,?Cars.com, and?Apartments.com,?as well as their competitors.
It is 25-30 years later, and the vertical channels are at the end of their run.
