Change is hard. Embrace it.
As Brené Brown says, embrace the suck. Not suffering, not hard, but the suck. The feeling that you endure now and then when you are in fact doing difficult things.
I can attest, it feels like the past 2 weeks have all been about the suck, but that's only because I realise that not all work is fun, sometimes it is the work that NEEDS to be done.
We all know the Albert Einstein quote; 'the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.' And its true.
Recently I was looking at what I needed to change as a leader and what in the business needed to change to both continue and accelerate our growth and impact and it meant doing something I really don't like. Process. More process and yet more process.
Recently we put our entire team through our motivators testing it showed what makes us tick and what drains us. And I know process drains me. But that's because I think I can do everything, all on my own, all the time. (Yup I have awareness around this stuff!) But that's not going to help me deliver on my key driver; IMPACT.
So why has it been so hard? Well I am re-setting the standard for both myself and the team in how we operate our business. And when I say re-setting the standard, I mean accepting that some things might be hurting our growth, and I know they are slowing us down.
That could be our thinking, our communication, our emotions or our fears. It may even be all of the above.
This is where the pain comes in. It's easier to stay the same, complain about what we don't have or what doesn't work. Change is much harder, especially when that change puts you well out of your comfort zone.
But think about it in a more positive way, change creates relevance. Whether it be in context of your life, your job or your business. Change can serve as the thing that reduces the pain over the long term and in fact might be better for you.
I'm not talking about reacting. But being aware. Eyes wide open. But in the same breathe, some things won't change, people won't change, circumstances won't change. Some are adaptable and some are along for the ride and nothing more.
It comes back to how you own your shit and if you are a leader are you willing to stand back and ask the question; what is the challenge and what am I prepared to do about it right now, to improve what the future can look like.
So, what does that change look like for us? Easy. No longer keeping all the information in my head, using technology and careful planning to share that load. A new family member joining to be strong where I am weak, setting clearer expectations.
Because once again as Brené says. 'Clear is kind. Unclear is unkind'.
As the leader of my life and my business, I have to be the change I want to see in the world. No one else can do it for me. And sometimes that sucks.
But I'm cool with that. Are you?

5 年I think you’ve hit it on the head, a leaders job is to make tomorrow better and the only way that happens is if you acknowledge that there’s room for improvement, figure out what better looks like, make a plan to achieve a better state and execute the plan. Change is only hard because we hold on to current state instead of embracing possible future states IMHO.
