Change is good, this is why we should embrace it.

At some point in human history, someone devised a universal student grading system that judged the capability of students based on whether or not they can regurgitate the knowledge into a question-and-answer form. They named it “tests” or “examinations”. The challenge with this system is that it makes little room for unique and atypical learners. It also does not take into cognizance the ability or inability of the student to apply learning to real-life situations and bring ideas into life through day-to-day projects or problem-solving. What that means is that a large population of students will either struggle to regurgitate rather than understand and apply knowledge, and the ones who are unable to do this would be punished with failure in a problematic assessment system.
Thank goodness the year is 2022 and dominant trends have emerged in the educational sector today. The first one is personalized learning which allows students to learn at their own pace using technological tools to help boost students learning capability.
The major attraction of personalized learning is how students are able to take control of their learning process and do things at their own pace. They are no longer forced to be part of the rat race of learning at the pace of others. With resources such as Coursera, Udemy, and YouTube, they define their learning experience which indeed makes all the difference in the world.
Nigeria is severely affected by poverty and low quality of education, this leads us to appreciate the positive effects that this could bring to our educational system. There is a lot that government can do, but with these tools, autonomy in learning is within the grasp of everyone. With the advancement of technology, students can take control of their education and indeed their lives.

The way we assess currently can’t be phased out totally at the moment, however, what we can do is to ensure that we help our children get access to personalized learning materials and platforms.?We can help them build their confidence by emphasizing that learning is a holistic process. In the process, we will inadvertently create a better society with more competent graduates which is as a result of better teaching and learning processes.?

2 年Well done sis! Students should be at the centre of their learning. Content knowledge without applying these to every day life makes learning mechanical.

2 年Adetola Salau , those #technologies you mentioned in the #video are great and up-to-the-minute. I like the way you let the audience know that even a #learner that has great #passion for art-related #activities would still enjoy participating in #STEAM-based #projects. Well-done sis.!

2 年The write-up speaks to individual learning styles and the consequences to students who do not test well. I absolutely agree, within well developed countries, the situation also exist. One major difference is that, they are quite aware and provide other infrastructures/options for such students. With Nigeria, the most critical issue for our nation as a whole is that we have seasoned professionals who believe in the regurgitating of knowledge with no form of application. This is much embedded at various levels of learning...and during interviews for job prospects. We have a structure in place reinforcing the practice. The question for me always is: Who will be the Change Agent for Nigeria among the decision makers? #windsoreducationalservices
