No improvement without change

Those of us in technology are accustomed to change. It is coming whether we like it or not. Those who are best prepared for change are going to be those who create the most opportunities in the process.
I do not merely preach this, but live and practice it as do those around me.
Change is bittersweet sometimes. This is one of those times. I am transitioning from working at GBH Communications to Electrosonic over the next couple of weeks. Going from one team of wonderful people to another. It is painful to leave, but a celebration of accomplishments together and expectations of a brighter future for all. It is also wonderful to be reunited with past friends who were long separated and who have created amazing success with in years past.
GBH has some cutting edge patented new technologies that are changing the focus/direction and addressing problems that pervade the industry along with a simplified and efficient new developments that are poised to make communications history on multiple levels. Sorry, cannot tell you what GBH's new innovations and directions are. What happens at GBH stays at GBH, but they will be making some major announcements at InfoComm and would highly recommend giving them a visit or following the press releases leading up, they are dropping hints!!!
GBH has visionary leadership, a brilliant technical team, excellent operations, and a family environment. What could possibly make anyone ever leave? The new GBH direction is simpler, easier and therefore less challenging to implement (which is all of the opposite of what I seek to keep my interest and challenge level up). I thrive on solving difficult and impossible challenges while GBH is making communications simpler and easier.
So the new adventures are taking me to Electrosonic who need no introduction. Electrosonic does the impossible and amazing. Is that not the ultimate challenge? Which of us has not watched the Electrosonic transition from manufacturer to integrator literally dreaming of the fun that we would have? Have been watching Electrosonic and dreaming of the days when I would be able to play on that level. (work, I meant work on that level). Just love to work with the complex and difficult and it will be a challenge to step up to the level of talent there. Who wouldn't have butterflies working with industry rock stars like Will Guest, Yiannis Cabolis, and a bunch of the people who have been making the systems that we all dream about for decades?
Change is painful. Growth is painful. But we can remain safe little caterpillars or blossom into beautiful butterflies. Definitely stretched my wings a bit at GBH. We did some very innovative stuff and they will continue to. But the core focus is easier and the challenges less frequent. It is time to fly further and to higher obstacles that are taking me in a different direction.
This transition begins with appreciation for those who have gotten me to this point for without them: I wouldn't be able to reach the next level. It is impossible to forget friends from GBH. It is time to start writing recommendations and giving endorsements. Huge thanks to Von, Michael, and Jose for giving me the chance to do great things at GBH. To Scott, Nektar, Darren, Jonathan, Tom, Liya, Gabrielle, Israel, Miguel, Jing, and the incredible sales efforts of: Gary, Reyna, Pete, Anthony, Tony, Jaime, Melanie, Spring, Gwynne, and others who brought the clients whose needs challenged and inspired me. We had some amazing vendors and partners that I owe thanks to as well who will not be left out either. So there are many recommendations and always so little time, but that is my list of people that I owe some significant written gratitude to for without each one of them: I would not have amounted to anything.
In every company: our team completes us. For if we were able to do everything and go it alone: we would not ever need to work for a company. But standing on the shoulders of giants is how we get to the next level. In a new company: it takes a while to learn the process and to adapt. So expect a time with fewer posts, that is simply how it all works. Day one begins with gratitude to Jessica, Michael, Yiannis and Will who have given me this opportunity. Day two through ___________ appreciation and gratitude for the team that I will come to depend upon. But it will take time to learn what the value adds are to even express them in any form. After that who knows? Embracing change is running full speed into the unknown with little more than a rough plan or idea plus the confidence that we can handle whatever happens.

7 年The circle is complete in the literal most uncanny manner 10 years ago (last month) is when I first joined GBH. Prior to GBH: conferencing was ONLY side line (while at Crestron, we supported it as a third party device). In 2007: conferencing became my focus beginning with GBH and for the next decade was a focal product. In 2008: after a massive downsizing and layoff: I had 5 years of other conferencing focused adventures at Disney only to return to GBH in 2014 and now 10 years and a few weeks later: I am finishing my conferencing decade where it all began. Surreal. GBH introduced me to a life changing technology and the last decade was eye opening and rewarding. In 2008: Disney was just beginning to really put video conferencing to work in a big way and the transformation was incredible. Prior to conferencing: there was substantial coast to coast travel and long delays in product creation, and collaboration. But with conferencing: the change was rapid, immediate and powerful. Imagine designing a simple T shirt before conferencing? Pick a fabric, and fly it coast to coast, having meetings and delays. Pick patterns, fly them coast to coast, having meetings and delays. Make prototypes, fly them coast to coast, having meetings and delays. To zoom in the camera, share the content and cut the time exponentially. That is one item. Repeat for ALL merchandise, food, beverages, movies, trailers, training, entertainment, movies, costuming, hiring, benefits, engineering, live events, storyboards, wire frame, finance, TV shows, safety, knowledge, information, etc etc etc and the whole company skyrocketed overnight. In 2008: I could have bought Disney shares for $15. That is only one client whose stock is trading at several hundred percent more today. Conferencing is a game changing technology, saving money, saving the environment, but that is the cost justification not the benefit. Conferencing and collaboration technology improves communication which is the key to success in a team/company. Of course it is satisfying to bring that level of change. But it is getting so simple thanks to the technology, manufacturers, products, interoperability, and processes at companies like GBH: that it just is not even a challenge anymore. Today the conferencing systems are completely automated with cameras and equipment that adjust to you, and your needs. The interfaces are seldom even needed anymore. My holy grail was to make a system that would know what you want and make it happen automatically. With cameras like the Polycom EagleEye Director2, the camera controls are now automated providing the optimum experience automatically for us. With control systems and AV products the system knows what volume, lighting level to set, when users are present in the room, and whether or not anyone has connected a laptop. The systems are beginning to work for the users instead of the users working for the systems. The only failures that are not yet overcome are knowing who you want to call, when you want to call them, and when you want to mute and unmute the microphones or camera video. Though I suspect that if we could scan brains in the room and see what parts of the brain were lit: we might be able to get the mute portion taken care of! There are already ways to automate calling with Microsoft calendar integration or personal login, or system invites, but the invite or Outlook calendar is created, so it is not "really" automated (but still pretty simple). Seriously folks: if this is all that you actually have to do: is dial and mute, this is the simplicity that is driving adoption through the roof. So in a sense: conferencing has succeeded already and even these last few items are going to require additional technological advancement to finally be ended. This is why it is time for something else. This is why conferencing no longer has as much appeal because most of it is so simple that it no longer requires an engineer to make it work. Thanks to Von and GBH for getting me on a 10 year ride full of memories, experience and friendship. It changed my life and the lives of many clients. We made so many companies more successful, profitable, and prosperous. We increased efficiency and communications. So proud of those years.

7 年Definitely leaving some big pieces of my heart at GBH. Change is painful, it hurts.
