Change in a Changing Environment

By Ron DiGiaimo MBA FACHE

In my experience, most people fall into one of two categories; those that like change and look forward to new challenges with new routes to new goals and possibilities, and those that prefer proven methods that consistently achieve their goals. I like to think of myself and our family of companies as hybrids. Change excites me – it drives me to achieve new goals while appreciating that we must bring along tried-and-true methods and those that can execute those methods consistently.

When I began a medical career 29 years ago, I eagerly learned from every manager I have ever had. I learned how to recognize people’s strengths and even more importantly, how to recognize what they were capable of in the future; even when the person themselves did not yet know the incredibleness (I like that word, ha) they were capable of.

I also had some true disasters as “mentors.” It has taken me a while, but I can now look back and actually thank them for what I learned. Those catastrophes taught me what not to do, what not to tolerate, what not to emulate and how not to get burnt out so I don’t become negative and a drain on a company.  While it’s great to have feedback on what is not covered in a work plan or even be totally corrected on an error, it is not ok, when the person is unable or unwilling to see positive potential or anything that has gone well with a plan. At that specific point, they define themselves as merely a tool to get where you want to be instead of a genuine leader guiding the team where it should be.

You cannot force someone to achieve their potential; it must be a buy-in that is steadily renewed with all involved parties. I had both incredible and terrible mentors that guided me, taught me and disciplined me to become the person I am today and am truly grateful for the lessons I learned from both.

I love to pass on the valuable experiences that I have experienced to willing students; even the stubborn, resistant “you don’t understand what I do or what my job is” students, as they actually provide the greatest reward. One of my mentors passed away a couple weeks ago after a lengthy battle with leukemia, he always pointed out the OBVIOUS (to me anyway ha-ha) in my early 20s. He told me “you’re really sharp”, “brilliant at times” although I thought it was ALL THE TIME, “a hard worker” and “no goal can escape you achieving it if you put your mind to it”, but he also cared enough to let me know that not everyone has your level of urgency and they may have competing priorities that might not match yours.  You see at that age, I wanted everything done right the first time by each individual no matter who they were or at what level. I wanted everyone up to speed on the latest rules, staffing issues and needs, financials, operational improvements, equipment etc. the moment they became available.

Now at 51 distinguished, more experienced, and way more handsome, I have not lost my drive and if conceivable, have actually increased the desire to achieve my goals by surrounding myself with an extraordinary and exceptional team. My many mentors have groomed me to appreciate and understand the increased need for diplomacy at all levels and taught me the importance of patience as some things may take longer than I would like; but, as long as we get there and all will be good!! I firmly believe we all have the ability to be a combination of the two choices and be a hybrid of change and incredibleness.

That’s what you will see with our companies and team. We have clients spanning all 50 states using a variety of services and products from our affiliated 4 companies.

Even if I say so myself, in a moment of brilliance (ha-ha), we have the best team in the nation to meet your needs! I think you will be impressed with our responsiveness, incredibleness J, knowledge base, professionalism and guidance. Thank you for considering our family of companies and thank you for the support that has gotten us to this level. We can’t wait for you all to see what we do in the coming years. Ron
