Change Begins Within.

Change Begins Within.

Believe it or not, in this country, the biggest liar, the biggest thief, is someone like me—a common person. This “common person,” a part of the general public, is shockingly stubborn and dishonest. This person isn’t in politics or the establishment! He’s neither a bureaucrat nor a general, yet he’s the biggest tyrant and the worst enemy of other ordinary people like himself.

If he sells fruit, he deliberately puts spoiled pieces into the bag. If he rides a motorcycle, he becomes a menace for both pedestrians and other drivers. If he drives a wagon or a bus, he does so recklessly, causing people to avoid him out of fear. If he’s behind the wheel of a tractor or dumper truck, he turns into the angel of death.

When he sits as a clerk in a government office, he hisses like a snake and stings like a scorpion. He goes for prayer and doesn’t return, leaving people waiting for him in frustration. If this common man is a shopkeeper, he treats customers like servants and himself as an overlord. Try returning shoes bought in the morning by evening; he won’t take them back, not even exchange them.

This common person throws garbage in the street. If he works in the gas department, he’ll take bribes to provide illegal gas connections. If he’s with the electric department, he records meter readings without even visiting homes. If he’s a telephone operator, he won’t even bother to answer the phone.

This same common man has spoiled the habits of politicians. Happily, he serves these politicians, their children, and their families. He spends his life spreading carpets at their gatherings, chanting slogans, running alongside their vehicles, and arguing with friends and relatives to support them—even cutting ties with his loved ones. But he neither shows mercy to himself nor demands his rights from politicians.

This common man torments millions of ordinary people like himself. If he prays in the mosque, he treats the imam as his servant. In business, he shortchanges others. If he works in someone’s home, he lacks loyalty to his employer.

This common man chases after saints and spiritual leaders but ignores serving his own parents. The day this common person transforms from merely existing to truly being humane, everything will change—from society to the halls of power. But there’s little hope of that happening.

Insightful Perspective:

This piece challenges us to reflect on how the “common person” contributes to the very issues we often blame on leadership or society. The truth is, if we desire change, it must start with our individual attitudes and actions. When each of us becomes mindful, ethical, and considerate, we create the society we wish to live in. Only by cultivating self-awareness and a sense of responsibility can we begin to heal our communities and ultimately, the world around us.
