In a historic development for India's space exploration journey, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) has officially approved the name "Statio Shiv Shakti" for the landing site of Chandrayaan-3's Vikram lander. This decision, announced on March 19, 2024, aligns with the previous announcement made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in August 2023.
What is Statio Shiv Shakti?
Statio Shiv Shakti is a name steeped in Indian mythology. "Statio" is a Latin term used in astronomical nomenclature to designate a landing site. "Shiv Shakti" together represents the masculine (Shiva) and feminine (Shakti) duality of nature, a concept central to many Indian religions.
The IAU's Gazetteer of Planetary Nomenclature, which documents officially recognized names for planetary features, describes Statio Shiv Shakti as a "compound word from Indian mythology that depicts the masculine (“Shiva”) and feminine (“Shakti”) duality of nature."
Significance of the Name
The approval of "Statio Shiv Shakti" holds significance on multiple levels:

Chandrayaan-3 Mission
Launched in July 2023, Chandrayaan-3 is India's third lunar exploration mission. It aimed to successfully land a lander and rover on the lunar surface. While the Vikram lander made a soft touchdown, communication was lost shortly thereafter. The mission's scientific goals included studying the lunar surface composition, searching for water ice, and deploying a seismic instrument.
Looking Ahead
The naming of Statio Shiv Shakti marks a significant milestone for India's spacefaring ambitions. It paves the way for future lunar missions and highlights India's growing role in the global exploration of our solar system. The mission's scientific findings, once retrieved, have the potential to further our understanding of the Moon's history and composition.
