Leaders are Readers
Do you subscribe to HBR (Harvard Business Review)? If you don’t, you should. Deborah Rowland penned an article titled: “Why Leadership Development Isn’t Developing Leaders”, and it’s worth ten minutes of your time. The takeaway? “Our primary method of developing leaders is antithetical to the TYPE of leadership that we need.”
As a Vistage Chair, this is thought-provoking because THIS is my wheel-house. Vistage provides an open forum for leaders in our community to pool perspectives and lean into differences. My job is to help you capitalize on the power of the peer group dynamic in a safe and agenda-free confidential environment, as well as curate diversity. As Deborah so eloquently states; “We need leaders not wedded to any particular leadership methodology or school of thinking and who could work skillfully with live group dynamics, creating psychological safety in the room for participants to take personal risks and push cultural boundaries. People able to carry part of the load to guide participants towards their personal and organizational summits.”
We heard from Vistage speaker John Asher this month, who agrees with this article on the necessity of working on the quality of our “inner game.” High emotional intelligence is crucial to effective leadership and conducting courageous conversations. You can find his ideas on leveraging your EQ here.
