A Chance Encounter: Networking Lessons Learned at the UNCF 80th Anniversary Celebration

This week, I had the incredible opportunity to travel to Washington, DC for the UNCF 80th Anniversary celebration. Stepping into the conference with an open mind and no set expectations, little did I know that this trip would mark a pivotal moment in my professional journey, especially as someone who has been working remotely and was about to meet my new colleagues for the first time.

Upon arriving at the hotel, I found myself on an impromptu nature walk to the nearby Whole Foods, in search of some protein shakes. Returning from my walk, hunger led me to the hotel bar for a quick bite. Little did I know that a simple accessory - my Astros hat - would spark a conversation that would change the trajectory of my career.

As I approached the bar, a gentleman struck up a conversation about my hat. This casual exchange quickly evolved into a discussion about our shared profession. He mentioned someone I needed to meet – a titan in fundraising, hailed as the "GOAT."

Moments later, the man being spoken so highly of, Love Collins III, appeared before me. With a warm smile, he handed me his phone and urged me to read an article titled "The Foundation for the National Institutes of Health Appoints Love Collins III to Lead Advancement and Development." In that instant, I realized I was in the presence of one of the most influential figures in fundraising.

As Mr. Love shared anecdotes from his illustrious career, including his work with various HBCUs and fundraising efforts for the Atlanta Olympics, I couldn't help but feel inspired.

Our conversation stretched for hour as we dined, and before it concluded, I mustered the courage to ask Mr. Love if he would mentor me. To my astonishment, he graciously accepted and even provided his personal email for further contact.

Reflecting on this encounter, I'm reminded of the importance of walking in our purpose and being guided by faith. Meeting Mr. Love was a testament to the power of serendipity and the impact of connecting with the right person at the right time.

Let's continue striving for greatness, embracing every opportunity, and remaining open to the unexpected paths that may lead us to our dreams.
