February 7, 2024, marks the 38th annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day (NGWSD - Women's Sports Foundation ), a pivotal moment each year where we celebrate the extraordinary achievements of women in sports and advocate for the continued advancement of gender equity. This day not only honors the accomplishments and contributions of female athletes but also emphasizes the transformative power of sports in fostering confidence, strength, and leadership among girls and women.
Established to acknowledge the monumental strides in women's sports and to recognize the ongoing fight for equality and access, NGWSD has grown into a nationwide celebration. Across the country, communities, schools, and organizations host events that inspire girls and women to participate in sports and highlight the importance of physical activity and empowerment.
In commemorating this impactful day, I spotlight five role models who have been instrumental in propelling gender equity in sports, each carving a unique path to empower and inspire future generations.
? Billie Jean King: An Unyielding Advocate for Equality
Billie Jean King's legacy transcends her 39 Grand Slam titles. Her relentless fight for gender equality and social justice is epitomized by the iconic 1973 "Battle of the Sexes" match . Beyond the court, in 2024, she continues to influence the sports world as part of ownership groups for the Los Angeles Dodgers , National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) ’s Angel City Football Club , and the PWHL hockey league, solidifying her status as an enduring champion for women's rights in sports and society.
? Diana Matheson and Project EIGHT: Elevating Women's Soccer
Diana Matheson , a figure synonymous with Canadian soccer, co-founded Project 8 Sports Inc. with an ambitious vision: to propel women's soccer forward. By establishing Canada's first professional women's soccer league, Diana is not just nurturing the growth of the sport but also ensuring that female athletes receive the recognition, support, and professional environment they deserve.

? Serena Williams: Investing in a Future of Equality
Serena Williams is not just a tennis legend; she's an investor with a mission. Her portfolio, emphasizing companies founded by women and minorities, reflects her profound commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable business landscape. Serena's strategic investments in diverse fields from sports to technology echo her advocacy for representation and success across all sectors.
