Champions of Care: Celebrating Kathleen Herhily

After an extraordinary 23 years of dedicated service with The Alzheimer Society of Ireland (The ASI), we recently celebrated the retirement of Kathleen Herlihy, a true Champion of Care and a remarkable Home Care Coordinator.

Here at The ASI, we recognise that providing support to someone with dementia and their family in the comfort of their home is not just a service — it’s a privilege. It’s an act of trust to be welcomed into someone’s home during one of the most challenging times in their lives.

This is why the dedication and compassion of our Home Care Coordinators, like Kathleen Herlihy, are so vital.

"It was a privilege to help and support clients and their families who strive to care for their loved ones living with dementia at home. Our home care service is an invaluable resource to those living in isolated areas and for those in the latter stages of their journey," said Kathleen.

Kathleen has touched the lives of so many, especially the families and clients in the North Kerry community. Her journey at The ASI exemplified what it means to go above and beyond for the people with dementia and families she supported, helping them navigate their journey with dementia with dignity and care.

"We want to take a moment to celebrate you and express our heartfelt gratitude, Kathleen. Your commitment, kindness, and professionalism have left a mark on everyone fortunate enough to work with you especially your families and clients in North Kerry area. This is not goodbye—it’s a new beginning. May this next chapter bring you joy, relaxation, and exciting adventures. Thank you for everything, and may your days ahead be as bright as the legacy you leave behind,” said our Operations Southern Regional Manager, Breda Twohig.

"What a journey and I can only enforce what Breda has said. So many years completed , so many families supported and helped. Be proud of all you delivered, Kathleen, and I can say unequivocally you ensured you let your voice be heard in support of those living with Dementia in Kerry and their families. You will be missed,” our Head of Operations and Community Engagement, Siobhan O'Connor.

As Kathleen moves into her well-deserved retirement her legacy will continue to inspire us all. ??

We wish her all the best in her exciting new chapter!
