Why Working at The Alzheimer Society of Ireland is More Than a Job?
For many, a career is a way to make a living. For those who work at The ASI, it’s about making a difference. The ASI isn’t just a workplace; it’s a community dedicated to creating a society where people living with dementia are understood, cared for, and valued.
A Unique Path to Purpose?
éilish’s career path has been anything but conventional. Working as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) during the COVID-19 pandemic, she worked tirelessly on the frontlines, performing tasks as critical as COVID testing and ambulance services. However, the challenges of the pandemic led her to pivot towards roles that would allow her to make a difference in a less high-risk environment.?
This journey eventually led her to The ASI, where she initially worked as a carer. “It was one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had,” éilish shares. Her passion for education and fundraising eventually saw her transition to her current role as Fundraising Executive.?
A Day in the Life of a Fundraising Executive?
In her role, éilish wears many hats. Whether it’s managing participant applications for campaigns like Denim Day, handling donation details in compliance with GDPR, or overseeing the organisation’s online store, no two days are alike.?
“Every task, big or small, feels purposeful,” she explains. From coordinating event packs to representing the organisation at campaign launches, her work is driven by the knowledge that every action contributes to supporting people affected by dementia.?
éilish is also preparing to take on a tutor role, delivering family carer courses to the public—a testament to her commitment to education and empowerment.?
The Challenges and Rewards of Dementia Care?
Having worked directly with individuals living with dementia, éilish has seen firsthand the gaps in care and support systems. This fuels her drive to advocate for better resources and understanding for those affected.?
Despite the challenges, she remains passionate. “What the ASI does matters,” she says. “It makes an enormous difference to so many people, and I’m privileged to be a part of that.”?
Looking Ahead: A Vision for Inclusive Communities?
éilish envisions a future where dementia-friendly initiatives are the norm, not the exception. She highlights examples like sensory pods in shopping centres as small but impactful steps toward inclusion. “These spaces can easily be adapted to meet the needs of people living with dementia, providing them with safe and quiet areas when out in public.”?
Her advice to the broader community? “Educate yourself on Dementia. It doesn't take much to make a difference. It's the smallest of actions, sitting with someone for a cup of tea for example, that can make a huge impact?on their day.”?
Why Choose a Career at The ASI??
For those considering a role in dementia care or support, éilish’s message is clear: “Do it!” She emphasises the importance of caring for yourself while caring for others and praises the ASI for its supportive work environment. “When you care, you’re motivated to do your best, and that’s what the people we help deserve.”?
