Championing Skin Equity: A Call to Dermatologists to Enroll in our Skin Equity & Inclusion Course
The ideal approach to all medical care, including dermatology, is that physicians are able to foster an environment where all individuals feel seen, heard, and can receive quality medical care. However, the sad reality is that the field of dermatology has historically underserved people of color, stemming from factors that are both systemic and entrenched. We know there is a lack of diverse representation in dermatological research, education, and practice, which is why, in partnership with Vaseline, we are expanding access to our online, self-paced, and interactive CE/CME accredited Skin Equity & Inclusion course to help dermatologists provide quality care to all of their patients.?
We invite all dermatologists to join us in this crucial mission and take our Skin Equity course.
The Imperative for Skin Equity
Skin conditions affect everyone, yet dermatological research and resources have predominantly focused on lighter skin tones. This disparity leads to misdiagnosis, delayed treatments, and increased mortality rates for skin cancer for people of color.?
Even on the internet, to see images of conditions on melanin-rich skin, searches need to be qualified with “on Black/Brown skin” (if they can be found at all). One tangible way we can improve outcomes and reduce the gap in dermatological care is to make sure that all dermatologists have the education and tools they need to address the long-standing bias and exclusion of people of color in skin health care.
