Championing options for those who need options.

Championing options for those who need options.

Meet Joe.

Coming up on 20 years with Hodges & Hicks, Joe Nickelson is one of our advocates for staying connected to the next generation of leaders in our industry. He helps them envision pathways outside of the norm, and champions options for kids who need options.?

We had a quick chat with Joe about his passion for connecting with kids in search of their next step – whether they are in college or even in high school. Here is what he shared.

?

Q. What is your advice to someone looking for their next step in construction??

Joe: A lot of people are given opportunities, it’s what you do with that opportunity that makes all the difference - that’s on you. A proven path to success includes self-motivation, a strong work ethic, a willingness to learn, and patience.

Q. What message are you trying to get out to these kids about the construction industry?

Joe: I grew up in a time when we were given a simple message – college or bust. As an industry, we have a stigma to fight. There is a story that has been told to kids at an early age that options might be limited if you don’t follow a traditional roadmap. I think it is up to us to reframe that story and tell kids what it CAN BE. I want to show the next generation that there are alternative paths available to them. Look for apprenticeship and internship programs. They are a great way to get your foot in the door.

Q. How does this fit within the mission of Hodges & Hicks General Contractors ?

Joe: This level of community outreach is not new to H&H, and I am proud of the work we have done over the years. Our internship/apprenticeship program has an above-average success rate of permanent placement within our company, and that’s a great thing.?

We see these kids for their potential. For some, that might be their first time hearing that. It’s not easy, but we have the patience and the willingness to invest back into them. This is a long-game. When we outreach to high schools, we are planting seeds. Our long-term commitment is to invest time and energy back into the #nextgeneration of leaders. We teach more than career skills; we teach them life skills. That’s something I can be proud of.
