A Champion is scared to lose, all the others are scared to win.

All the Villeneuve's boys in my family race on anything equipped with an engine, it seems to be in our DNA. My sons, my grandsons, even one of my daughter in law, race on something which makes noise and goes fast. Good thing for everyone we are not in the Taxi business. We would do better as ambulance drivers.

But that day, on the above picture, my son Christian was racing Kart in an event which was part of the Asian Championship. We were waiting at the departure line and he seems very relaxed, kind of too relax. "Is there anything wrong? Are you scared?" I asked. Christian have been racing, holding the Singapore flag, since the age of 8. And then to my surprise he replies "yes, a little, but less than the other guys". Then he added "I am scared to lose, but they are even more scared to win, so we are fine dad."

Being in front of the crowd is scary, for most, in business too. You always need to work harder to stay there. It is not a comfortable position. Following is way easier than leading. When you are a follower, no one is surprised to see fail. No stress. But when you lead, people expect you to be the one who comes up with the new best thing. This is what Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Jack Ma and Li Ka-shing did, in their respective businesses. It looks easy to be the first, but it is not.

Christian is now older, and he is the CTO of Azzilon, a Fintech Company we created together a few years ago. I recently transferred to him more responsibilities, and he told me just the same words as he said when he was on the racing grid. "I am always a little bit scared not to be the best, but our competitors will be even more scared by us, trust me, we are fine Dad."

Children learn what they are taught and they love you as much as you love them.

Racers race, but first they need to race with themselves and win over their ego. Confidence will take you a step further than your competitors. I like Christian's confidence. He knows when and how to manage his fear into a boost! bravo Christian Villeneuve!
