Challenging yourself enough?

Challenging yourself enough?

I met Lavanya recently, an old friend! She loves driving, you give her a steering with wheels and some soulful music in the background and she is suddenly on cloud 9, as if touching heaven! We laugh together at it sometimes. ??

She has always been driving in the city but recently she has started driving on highways, oh! And how exhilarating that is!

Recently, she insisted on driving on route from Delhi to Nainital. She had her family accompanying, including two astute drivers who could drive, but she insisted on driving! There was some issue why both drivers were a little uncomfortable driving that day and she decided to take charge. The journey was moving smoothly but slowly the road changed into a kutcha road with highway traffic.. and it started growing dark! In the beginning, there was some panic, as it was her first time, constant instructions to guide were flying and once there was a stretch when she was like, insisted to give the car back! No, not because she was not driving carefully but because the onlookers lacked confidence.

Amidst this atmosphere, she decided to take charge, asked the family to believe in the person with the steering wheel, rest with understanding that she has been an experienced driver and just relax!

The moment she took charge, the world in the car relaxed, it was a difficult stretch, she really had to strain her eyes in the night traffic ( anyone who has driven on that road would know). She carried on with confidence and grit and the journey ended smoothly and happily! She received pats on the back from her family, they were really proud!

During the journey she wondered why she insisted on driving today and what it taught her - it helped her develop a life skill! It brought confidence to her, she realized she is no less and she can take charge when she believes in herself! It made her more alive!

If we do not take risks and go out of our comfort zone, we will remain stagnant and would never grow!

I was joking to her, now you are quite an expert driver, during holocaust (God forbid), who knows you will be among the chosen ones to save the world!

Really, it’s so relevant for us to grow and learn and improve each day- so what life skill are you mastering today or helping your kids master??

An interesting take on a woman’s whim to drive on a difficult stretch. It’s amazing how we take decisions to do or not to do something at crucial times. It’s largely our self talk that propels us to take charge or let go. I am personally quite under confident of driving on highways... and even before someone else can tell me I am not good enough, I tell myself I am not good enough. Kudos to Lavanya! Taking charge is brilliant!
