This past Saturday, as I watched the presentation of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, I found myself deeply moved by the stories of the recipients. Each individual honored had made significant contributions to their communities, their industries, and the world. What struck me most was not just their achievements but the unwavering commitment to “doing something”—a phrase that seems deceptively simple but is profoundly impactful when put into practice.
In the fast-paced world we live in, it’s easy to become consumed by the daily grind. We often focus on our immediate responsibilities, personal milestones, and professional goals. Yet, the individuals honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom serve as a reminder that life’s true measure lies not only in what we achieve but in the positive impact we leave behind. They challenged the status quo, stood firm in the face of adversity, and created a ripple effect that continues to inspire and uplift others.
As I reflected on this ceremony, I couldn’t help but think about the legacies we’re building—not just for ourselves but for the generations to come. What will we be remembered for? Are we content with the systems and norms we’ve inherited, or are we willing to challenge them in pursuit of something better? These questions, while uncomfortable, are necessary.
Challenging the Status Quo
Leaving a legacy of good often begins with the courage to challenge the status quo. It means questioning outdated systems, advocating for change, and refusing to accept mediocrity or injustice. The Presidential Medal of Freedom recipients exemplify this courage. Whether it was through activism, innovation, or acts of service, they dared to disrupt norms and pave the way for progress.
In my own career and personal life, I’ve learned that challenging the status quo isn’t about being rebellious for the sake of rebellion—it’s about being intentional. It requires curiosity to identify areas of improvement, integrity to uphold your values, and hard work to turn your vision into reality. It’s about “doing something” even when the path ahead isn’t clear.

The Power of “Doing Something”
Too often, we underestimate the power of taking action. We tell ourselves that one person can’t make a difference or that the problems we face are too big to solve. Yet, the stories celebrated on Saturday prove otherwise. Each of these individuals started with a single step—a single decision to act. Over time, their actions compounded into transformative change.
This idea of “doing something” resonates deeply with me because it’s a reminder that we all have a role to play. Whether it’s mentoring a colleague, advocating for better workplace policies, or volunteering in our communities, the choices we make every day contribute to the legacy we leave behind.
A Call to Action
The presentation of the Presidential Medal of Freedom wasn’t just a ceremony—it was a call to action. It challenged me, and perhaps all of us, to reflect on how we can leave our own legacy of good. What are we willing to stand for? What impact do we want to have on the people and systems around us?
The answers may differ for each of us, but the message remains the same: Do something. Challenge the status quo. And above all, strive to leave the world a little better than you found it.
