John is a young man in his early 20’s and has been with the company just over a year as a junior engineer. When John is on form he is a very competent person. He also appears to have lots of potential, proving on several occasions to be good both in a crisis but also full of ideas about how to improve things. However, very frustratingly he has recently been letting the team down with his lack of communication. At times, he is very distracted and doesn’t listen carefully enough, the result being a couple of things have been missed and not passed on to the rest of the team causing errors and rejected work. His manner and demeanour suggest he is burning the candle at both ends as he is constantly yawning and you have heard he is out late ‘socialising’.
You need to get the bottom of this issue quickly because your boss is putting you under pressure to meet output targets and you cannot afford any mistakes!

7 年Hi Gary. Yes it would be good to catch up. Ironically we are heavily into apprenticeships just now. By that I mean understanding the structure and support for the knowledge and skills. 7 年Hi Julian, I must have some good guidance through my career, thank you. I would first ask John how we could help, has he any ideas of what support or changes could be made. We have the potential of flexible working and could be a short term solution till he gets himself back on his feet and his family settled. There are also other things some employers offer, for instance help with childcare all practical things and we mustn't forget the emotional stress he is going through too. I would honour he wishes to not make it common knowledge but also encourage him to talk, people will soon ask questions and gossip so coming up with a plan and even a white lie to help with his colleagues would be a start.

7 年Not a bad guess Gary! The scenario is that John's personal issue is his partner has left him and he has a young child to look after. He doesn't want the situation to become widely known and has therefore kept it to himself. The consequence is burning the candle at both ends, tiredness, a lack of communication and a drop in his general performance. You did well to avoid the trap of 'laying down the law' which often happens, and you have strived to find out the reason. You clearly want John to stay because his attributes are valuable when he's on form. So, knowing all this what action could you now take to resolve the situation? Julian

7 年Not to be stereotypical but could be a new member to his family, could be studying to become a senior engineer?

7 年Again, nicely summarised Gary. I particularly like the reference to creating the right culture so employees feel they can open up about personal issues. Any thoughts as to what the 'personal issue' might be?
