The challenges of protecting people travelling in an unsecure world!

According to the current U.S. Department of State Travel Advisory at the date of this report’s publication, Reynosa (Tamaulipas) has been assessed as Level 4: Do not travel

Overall Crime and Safety Situation:

U.S. Embassy Mexico City does not assume responsibility for the professional ability or integrity of the persons or firms appearing in this report. The ACS Unit cannot recommend a particular individual or location and assumes no responsibility for the quality of service provided. The U.S. Department of State has assessed Reynosa (Tamaulipas) as being a CRITICAL-threat location for crime directed at or affecting official U.S. government interests and US citizens.

Crime Threats:

The general crime rate in Reynosa (Tamaulipas) is above the U.S. national average, and crime varies widely. The low rate of criminal convictions contributes to the high rate of crime. Although there is no pattern of criminals specifically targeting foreign or U.S. businesses/personnel, criminals will target anyone perceived as lucrative and vulnerable. Criminals select victims based on an appearance of prosperity, vulnerability, or a lack of awareness. Armed robberies, kidnappings, car thefts, credit card fraud, and various forms of residential/street crime are daily concerns. Jewelry (including expensive watches) and cellular phones can be sold easily in vast illegal markets. Thefts of the vehicle’s operating computer and sound systems are common crimes. Although Mexico employs strict gun-control laws, criminals are often armed with handguns or knives.

Warning: “We want you to know the danger of traveling to high-risk places and to strongly consider not going to them at all. Traveling to high-risk locations puts your life, and possibly the lives of others, in jeopardy. Traveling to high-risk areas puts you at risk for kidnapping and hostage-taking – this should be a consideration before travel.”

Not sure how I missed this one when you published a few weeks ago! Definitely allows those expatriates, business leaders, etc considering travel to Reynoso to look at the environment via the eyes of a security practitioner that knows the environment very well. Keep up the great work!
