The Challenges of Outdoor Gyms

… And how Outdoor Fitness Concepts can help you overcome them

Building a gym outdoors is always a challenge. From unexpected gas mains and drainage underground, to the quality of the foundations and access to the site, there can be a range of key issues to address - both expected and unexpected!

The team at Outdoor Fitness Concepts has the knowledge, experience and access to trusted partners to overcome these challenges, creating incredible outdoor workout spaces for our clients across the UK.

Here are some of the main challenges you might face, and how our team can help you overcome them to bring your vision to life.

Digging up the ground

When digging up the ground, you never know what you might find. Even after completing surveys, the reality is, as soon as you dig the ground up, you can find anything from power cables and gas mains, to drainage. Which you want to avoid if possible!

Where you might expect to find Type 1 MOT compacted under the surface, or even soil, once works begin, we might find concrete or rubble, especially at the side of new housing developments, which is much more challenging to work with.

But, in our experience, everything is workable. Outdoor fitness spaces are very cost-effective at around 12% of the total cost of their indoor counterparts.

Our install teams have decades of experience, and they always find a solution for our clients!?

Civil work

Gas and electricity services can cause an issue to any outdoor project when it’s found under the ground, as can drainage.

In the past, we’ve found substandard drainage, most of which has simply deteriorated over time, most of this needs replacing and can be very low cost. So it makes sense to complete this at the same time as our installation, helping our clients avoid future issues and potentially save money.

For gas and electricity, we can bridge the cables, supporting and protecting the mains lines to help avoid any issues that might incur further costs. And, importantly, keep the overall cost of your project down!

These challenges can be inevitable and unavoidable. It’s how you approach and deal with the issues at hand that really makes a difference to the success of your project.

Access to the site

The access to your site can be an incredibly important challenge to overcome, both during the project and after it’s completed for your users!

Many outdoor gyms are located within parks or fields, which can be difficult for essential vehicles to access, can cause damage to the existing ground such as sports fields and can add significant cost to the project.

We work with each client, to find the best solution. If we can’t get a concrete lorry near the site, we can pipe it in, and we can carry equipment hundreds of metres to get it installed to avoid ground damage.

Accessibility is hugely important to us and our clients, with wheelchair-accessible outdoor fitness equipment available, so we’ll always work with our clients to ensure the site is as accessible as possible for their users upon completion.
