Over the years, the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) has not been able to meet expectations. Trained members face challenges practicing effectively due to the lack of recognition by various governments (Federal and State) and heavy reliance on government subvention. The private sector has played a crucial role in keeping the institute operational.
Minister of Information, Mr. Mohammed Idris (FNIPR), a fellow of the Institute, has assured the new board of his support. He emphasized the ministry's willingness to partner with the Institute in repositioning the country and reorienting Nigerians.
The responsibility now falls on Dr. Ike Neliaku and other Council members to heed the Minister’s call to elevate the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) and establish it as a recognized and influential body in national affairs. A comprehensive approach focusing on internal strengthening, advocacy, partnerships, and professional development is crucial
- Enhance Internal Governance and Standards of the Institute: Strengthen Leadership and Governance: Ensure strong, competent, and visionary leadership that sets a clear strategic direction for the institute.
- Review and Update the Constitution and Bylaws: Regularly review and update the institute's constitution to align with current needs, global trends, and industry standards.
- Review of the Code of Ethics and Professional Standards: Develop a comprehensive and enforceable code of ethics and professional standards to guide member conduct and address improper admission practices.
- Advocacy and Public Awareness: Actively engage and advocate on pressing issues affecting the nation, such as climate change and terrorism.
- Government Liaison and Advocacy: Establish a dedicated advocacy unit to engage with the government and advocate for the recognition and role of public relations in national affairs.
- Media Engagement: Regularly engage with the media to highlight the institute's activities and communicate the value of public relations to the Nigerian nation.
- Professional Training and Partnerships: Maintain regular training programs, workshops, webinars, and seminars to keep members updated on industry trends and best practices. Collaborate with universities to align PR education with industry needs.
- Research Grants and Scholarships: Establish a fund to support research initiatives in public relations and communication, encouraging innovation, knowledge dissemination, skill enhancement, professional growth, global recognition, and collaboration.
- Member Engagement and Financial Sustainability: Establish feedback mechanisms to gather members' needs, challenges, and expectations. Communicate institute updates, initiatives, and opportunities to members.
- Strategic Partnerships and Alliances: Collaborate with industry associations, corporate bodies, and international or global PR organizations to share resources, knowledge, and best practices. Establish partnerships with relevant government agencies to contribute expertise in policy development and implementation.
?In conclusion, the new leadership of the institute should implement these strategies to strengthen the position of NIPR, improve the effectiveness of its members, and assert its influence in national affairs, ultimately fulfilling its mandate and contributing significantly to the public relations profession in Nigeria
