Operational technology (OT) systems like manufacturing plants, utilities, and other critical infrastructure are increasingly being targeted by cyberattacks. As these OT environments converge with IT systems, new vulnerabilities are introduced that many organizations are struggling to properly secure.
According to Fortinet's 2023 State of Operational Technology and Cybersecurity Report, the gap comes down to inconsistent security policies and enforcement across converged IT/OT environments. While 76% of OT professionals report that cybersecurity solutions aid their success through improved efficiency and flexibility, siloed tools and lack of integration make maintaining security standards difficult.
75% of organizations surveyed experienced at least one intrusion in 2022, with phishing, malware, and ransomware being the most prevalent. Alarmingly, ransomware incidents increased 12% year-over-year.
As an IT consultant focused on security, I work closely with clients to take a platform-based approach to avoid tool sprawl. Integrated solutions allow for centralized management and orchestration across IT and OT infrastructure. We also advocate for appointing a Full time or atleast a Fractional CISO with visibility into both environments, which 94% of organizations now have or plan to implement.
The potential disruption to critical services and safety makes closing the policy gap an urgent priority.
