The challenges of the energy system: more efficiency and higher absorption capacity for the generated electricity

The #energy sector in particular, but also transport and industry, are characterized by a strong need to increase energy #efficiency. Reducing energy consumption has become a goal for both residential and industrial consumers, due to the liberalization of the electricity market and investments in the area.

Emerging from the coal age largely involves the creation of smart grids, decentralisation of energy production and also larger storage capacities. Grid losses are still high, as is the industrial and public buildings’ consumption.

Romania aims to have a share of 30.7% of domestic energy consumption in 2030 from renewable resources, the most ambitious target of green energy in Central and Eastern Europe. ?However, the increase in production capacity must be integrated into the existing grid, which needs extensions in order to absorb new resources.

The country's energy mix is diversified: roughly, #hydropower provides 22.11% of the domestic energy production, gas-fired power plants - 21.50%, Cernavod? nuclear power plant - 21.43%, coal-fired power plants - 19.95%, and renewables - 15% : 13.35% wind, 0.76% solar and 0.41% biomass (Association of the Electricity Producers).

Although Romania has a balanced energy mix, production costs are high, due to the lack of efficiency. The energy experts in the AHK Romania community think that investments, specialists, construction companies and technology are needed.

"The Romanian authorities should prioritise public policies on energy efficiency measures in parallel with a medium- and long-term investment strategy to ensure the development of new production capacity,” they say.

AHK Romania through its platform econet romania has a rich experience in the field of energy efficiency and renewable energies and regularly carries out various projects in Germany and Romania, as part of the Export Initiative “Energy Solutions-Made in Germany” of the Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Klimaschutz .
