Challenge the Yes
CHALLENGE THE YES
Most coaches:
[Client] Yes. I am in.
[Coach] YIPPPEEE! I mean, please send me a check.
Rare (successful) coaches:
[Client] Yes. I am in.
[Coach] Let's slow things down for a moment. I don't want you to feel rushed to sign up. In the past, I had people 'say' they were in. But they were not. They quit early. And the truth is that most people quit before they even start.
I am not prepared to let that happen to you.
What will you do if it gets hard?
What will you do if you feel stuck?
What will you do if you are concerned about money?
Until you can answer these questions, I will not let you become a client.
I am not looking for a "Yes."
I will only work with a client when it is a "Hell Yes." For both of us.
When did you last say YES too quickly?
Love. Rich

2 年That is so true! And works both ways. As a coach if I am like Yes, I’m in, I ask myself to slow down and define similar questions. Why was the yes so easy? Why is it so important to me to say Yes now? Afterall it is all about being on the same page in the same pace with client. Thanks for the post, Rich.

2 年yes, this is what I always advocated even when "selling" other type of services. Taking an easy yes, and then spend months with someone that is not ready or didn't really understand what they were getting, doesn't bring any value to you or them.

2 年So true! I always encourage potential new clients to take time to think and be sure that they want to take this step. And it was such a great experience so far to see how they process. Some come back very fast and confirm with a strong yes. And others take some months to process and then they come back. It's encouraging!

2 年Love this Rich Litvin - it's the difference between a "polite" yes that won't be sustainable and a "running, jumping, leaping into the sandpit with both feet" YES. They're the ones we want for sure.
