Challenging the status quo isn’t just an act; it’s a mindset—a sense of purpose that defines us and validates our education & upbringing in the truest sense. University of Chicago has produced 100+ Nobel Laurates, one can easily connect with the culture of this institution.
Every achievement, no matter the field, stems from this fundamental instinct: the courage to question what exists and envision what could be.
Great strategists have often emphasized the power of asking "Why?" It’s this question that activates the relevance of professional wisdom, pushing individuals and organizations alike to grow and thrive.
Organizations that Thrive vs. Those That Fade
History is replete with examples of companies that thrived by challenging the norms—and those that vanished because they didn’t.
Take Tata Steel, for instance. The company remains a global force, not just for its steel-making capabilities but for its relentless pursuit of excellence through initiatives like TQM, TOP, PEP, ASPIRE, TOC, and many more. These methodologies have redefined processes, not only in Qualitative production but across maintenance and services, showcasing a holistic approach to continuous improvement.
Airtel, often termed India’s first startup in the telecom revolution of the late 90s, exemplifies this ethos. As a first mover, they must have faced immense risks—rolling out operations across a vast, diverse country with no prior benchmarks to lean on. By pioneering outsourcing (IT) of non core business and embedding cost & quality' optimization into their DNA, they set new industry standards. Even during Jio’s aggressive free-offer onslaught during their launch phase in 2016, Airtel didn’t just survive; they redefined their strategies and regained their commanding position.
Their defining mantra? "Why not?"!!!
There are many such examples. I thought of sharing my experiences of working with these organizations.
The Individual Perspective
This principle isn’t exclusive to organizations—it applies equally to individuals. Each of us has the potential to transcend limitations by refusing to accept the status quo.
Asking "Why?" or "Why not?" shifts our orientation, sparking change and growth. After all, nothing changes unless we change.
Without this shift, careers risk becoming mere "carriers" of monotony. But with it, they transform into meaningful journeys, marked by constant evolution and achievement.
So, dare to challenge.
Let "Why not?" define your approach—because true transformation begins with questioning the status quo, both personally and professionally. When even a renowned strategist like Ram Charan frequently advises managers to challenge instructions or organizational directives they disagree with, it signals a growing concern. Accepting without questioning may feel easier, but it ultimately undermines credibility and limits growth.
