It takes discipline to view a challenge as an opportunity. When facing a challenge we can allow fear and worry to paralyze us. Challenges often cause us to experience self- doubt, discouragement, or even depression. Here are four ways to turn a challenge into an opportunity
1. " Accept It": Many people would rather avoid the truth than face it head on. For example, some people attempting to lose weight might avoid looking at the scale. They falsely assume that if they don't acknowledge the issue, it is not really an issue. We all know that is not true when we step back and view the situation, but in tough times, we sometimes chose to ignore reality. Brushing off a real challenge to deal with later is not the best answer. Choosing to accept the realities of a challenge, however, is a great place to start.
2. "Own It": After you have acknowledged the challenge, it is time to own the role that you play in it and move beyond the challenge. Whether you caused the challenge or not, the challenge still exists, and is probably not going anywhere. Take responsibility, avoid complaining and feeling sorry for yourself, roll up your sleeves and work hard toward a solution.
3. "Move": At times, we can become sidelined by a major challenge and lose the motivation to keep fighting and moving forward. Winston Churchill said, "Success is moving from failure to failure without a loss of enthusiasm". Rather than complaining, successful leaders consistently move to action rather that stagnation.
4. "Re-Focus": There has never been a better time to pivot. Entire industries have been forced to course correct because of the pandemic and to remain successful, they've quickly adapted and innovated their business models. You are the one who gets to make the decision to either ride the waves of change or ultimately get crushed by the challenging waves; the decision is yours. When you experience a challenge this week, don't shrink back, but make the decision to view it as an opportunity.
