I recently published an essay about inappropriate questions employers sometimes ask job candidates.? A friend asked me for some examples of inappropriate answers that candidates sometimes give during a job interviews.?
Challenge accepted. ?Here are 10 inappropriate responses to interview questions:
- Making negative comments about past employers, or about the prospective employer.? Example:? That may be the worst place on earth to work.
- A response indicating you lack knowledge about the company you’re interviewing with. Example:? I haven’t done a lot of research about this place.
- A disrespectful response such as:? I’ve already explained this to the last person you sent to speak to me.
- An answer that is vague or evasive, such as:? I wouldn’t exactly say I was fired.
- Unprofessional responses, such as this:? Look, I’m just here for the paycheck.
- Sharing controversial opinions, for example:? I left because I couldn’t stand the whining. People need to just man-up at work.
- A response that is either defensive or aggressive.? For example:? I changed jobs 3 times in the last 18 months. Sue me.
- Inconsistent responses to interview questions:? Example:? I’m a team player (in response to one question); I prefer to work alone (in response to another).
These types of answers suggest a lack of professionalism and self-awareness.
