Chairman's weekly blog - Snowy Setbacks to League Cup Triumph
Rossington Main FC
Doncaster’s highest ranked Non-League Football Club in the Northern Counties East League Premier at Non-League step 5.
I hope this week’s blog entry finds you all well despite the recent cold snap and unexpected snow that disrupted our schedule this week.
Unfortunately, several matches had to be cancelled due to the adverse weather conditions, making it a relatively quiet week on the field. However, we did manage to squeeze in a thrilling game at our home ground on Tuesday evening under the lights.
In a League Cup fixture against Retford FC, our first team showcased their quality, securing a 3-1 victory and advancing to the 4th round. It was a strategic move by our manager, who rested a few key players to keep our focus sharp on the ongoing league campaign, he even took to the field himself, alongside his assistant, giving some of our lads a well-deserved break and leaving our Director of Football to control from the side lines taking his position in the dugout.
Following this NCEL Cup game with Retford FC, our captain Greg Young who guided us to promotion last season has now made 100 competitive appearances for Rossington which includes 12 goals and this was also his 713th career appearance.
Off the pitch, progress on our new cafe build project continued despite the weather challenges. While the plastering had to be delayed, we successfully completed some electrical work and devised a plan for the upcoming stages. This project is a testament to our commitment to enhancing the overall experience for our members and fans.
Early in the week, I had a routine catch-up with the vice-chair, where we meticulously reviewed the accounts, approved expenditures, and settled outstanding bills.

Tuesday brought the excitement of the League Cup game, and I was thrilled to witness a lively crowd gathering for a midweek clash. The camaraderie among the supporters always adds to the thrill of the game.
However, the rest of the week became a bit hectic for me due to work commitments and an intense three-day training program. This left me unable to attend to football matters on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Nevertheless, I utilised Saturday to clear my inbox, catch up with club officials, and plan for the upcoming week, as I'll be once again engaged in a three-day work training course.
Sunday's plan to watch our ladies in action was thwarted by overnight snowfall, leading to the game's cancellation. It's a reminder that nature can sometimes disrupt even the best-laid plans in the world of football.
Looking ahead, my agenda for the week includes ordering glass for the windows in the cafe build. Additionally, I aim to find time to meet with the first-team manager for a comprehensive review of our progress against our objectives. As we have now reached the halfway mark of the season, discussions will focus on what's achievable, and we'll revisit our goals after the Christmas fixtures for a clearer perspective.
Currently sitting in 8th place, there's optimism in the air, and talk is swirling around the possibility of making a playoff push. While we remain cautiously optimistic, it's heartening to see the club's potential shining through.
