Chain Regulations and Maintenance
This document covers Colorado chain regulations and chain maintenance for commercial vehicles.
From September 1st to May 31st, commercial vehicles driving through Colorado must carry chains.? Due to Colorado's unpredictable weather, it is essential to carry chains for driving in snowy or icy conditions. There are multiple chain-up and chain-down locations across Colorado, so you won't need to chain up your truck in traffic.
Starting September 1st, Colorado State Troopers will inspect commercial vehicles to ensure they are carrying chains. Non-compliance can result in a fine of up to $500 plus a $79 surcharge. Blocking a roadway due to not having chains incurs a $1000 fine plus a $157 surcharge. Therefore, it is crucial to carry chains when driving through Colorado.
Chain maintenance is crucial for safety and longevity. Ensure your chains are tight around the tires to prevent rapid wear and breakage. Loose chains can hit the wheel well, causing damage. Drive no faster than 30 mph with chains to avoid breakage. Always carry extra cross links, a chain tool, and repair accessories such as threaded quick links, lap links, or cross chain repair links for quick repairs.
Ensure safety and preparedness when traveling or trucking across Colorado during winter conditions.
