Climate Week NYC 2024: Key Takeaways

Louis Roy, CEO of OPTEL, and Desmond O’Sullivan, VP of Business Alliances, represented OPTEL at Climate Week NYC 2024, where the climate crisis was recognized as an urgent and immediate challenge, particularly in its disruption of global supply chains. The financial consequences are becoming more severe, with significant potential impacts on top and bottom lines.

A key solution discussed was supply chain traceability, offering the real-time visibility needed to manage these disruptions and mitigate risks. Louis emphasized the urgency of taking action now—while regulatory compliance is approaching, businesses must prioritize visibility to navigate risks and seize new opportunities.

Among the main themes were the collaboration between sustainability and procurement teams, crucial for de-risking transitions and aligning resources for effective climate action. The risk of planetary tipping points is often underestimated, with significant cost impacts expected over the next decade. Despite some ESG backlash, this is an opportunity for businesses to focus on core climate targets.

Furthermore, the need for net zero commitments was emphasized—both in setting targets and in developing technologies to support broader climate initiatives. The circular economy and deforestation-free supply chains were recognized as key areas for decarbonization, alongside addressing the carbon removal funding gap to ensure sustainable and resilient global systems.

OPTEL’s traceability solutions are positioned to support businesses in addressing these challenges and preparing for the future.

Louis Roy delivered an insightful speech at the event, ‘Our Pitch Perfect: Cleantech Solutions from Québec for a Cleaner Climate Future.
