California Signs New Climate Disclosure Law: Senate Bill 219
California has introduced a new climate disclosure law, Senate Bill 219, signed on September 27, 2024, which updates the Climate Corporate Data Accountability Act. This bill mandates extensive carbon reporting for companies exceeding certain revenue thresholds, particularly focusing on Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions and climate-related financial risks. SB 219 extends the California Air Resources Board’s (CARB) rule finalization deadline, provides flexible reporting timelines, allows parent company consolidated reporting, and removes upfront filing fees. OPTEL offers guidance on achieving compliance with Senate Bill 219, emphasizing supply chain mapping, automated data collection, and supplier collaboration for streamlined reporting.
