Chai, Mithai and Challenging Myths: The facts about disability

At Changing Our Lives, we often encounter cultural myths, where disability is associated with shame and sometimes seen as a punishment for wrong doing.

In the words of Monique Mehra, one of our Associates:

“Before I visited the Golden Temple, people told me to swim in the waters and my disability would be cured. My disability can’t be cured. It’s part of me.”

Aware of the impact such beliefs can have on people’s lives and experiences, we recently produced a short film in coproduction with disabled people and their families as part of our Chai, Mithai and Challenging Myths project, which aims to break down some of these cultural barriers and open up conversations regarding disability in a safe, respectful and welcoming space.

This film, entitled Chai, Mithai and Challenging Myths: The facts about disability, explores myths around learning disability and autism. It can be found on our website under Current Campaigns as well as on YouTube.
